Chicago Charter Member of The Indiana League of Home Dailies Regardless of the fact that a large number of ballots have been thrown out in the Fort Wayne recount, there seems to be no chance to change the results as announced by the regular boards. Mayor-elect Bangs of Hunting- , ton proposes to open his new administration with a "bang.’’ He has announced a clean sweep of all city employes. He will probably i know more about operating his city 1 after a few years experience. The heavy snows in the west and ■ < north are probably for the purpose ~ of making it possible for Santa Claus to move down this way. It , won’t be long now. Do you realize . that it’s only two weeks from , Tuesday until Christmas day is , here. j - —r- ( Old Santa is on the way and is getting a line on the good boys and girls. Don't forget that one of his agencies here is the Good Fellow’s club. Drop a dollar or two in their stockings and they will see that a lot of cheer is distributed on Christmas Eve. If President Roosevelt's plan to I give employment to four million heads of families works, the relief i problem is solved largely. And when Franklin D. starts a program, | he usually carries it through. No one has ever carried a heavier load with a broader or more contagious smile. The cocktail hour which is now becoming quite popular in most ol the large cities and some of thel smaller ones is another modern 1 agency for demoralizing the young men and women, particularly the latter. It should be headed off and the way to do that is to decline to patronize them. Every community needs a good newspaper and to have just that, you must of course support it. There is no method by which you can reach your patrons as easily and as convincingly, it is your best interests to boost for a paper that | is always seeking means by which to aid you and your interests. should be careful not to rock the boat too much. We still have some rapids to cross and we ought to all pull together. The Decatur Light and Power Company shows an increase in their business the past month, a barometer that tells much. When business is going and when factories are operating this company is sure to do a profitable business but when times are slack, they like every other industry, feel the effets. The past several years have not been easy for the city plant but by careful management, they have gotten by without loss aud the machinery has been maintained. That is something worth while.
One week from today is an important date for sugar beet growers for that's the occasion when the Central Sugar Company will distribute four dollars per ton to those who have delivered beets to the plant, up to December Ist and will mean the pay-off to a total of a quarter million dollars. Later the profits will be distributed as last year with indications of every grower being more than satisfied. The campaign which will close about the twentieth has been a very satisfactory one considering the extremely dry weather of the summer and early fall. if a recomendatiou to be made to the legislature by a committee on government economy becomes law, twenty-four circuit judgeships will be vacated. They propose that many counties be combined, for instance under the new order there would be one judge for Adams. Blackford and Wells counties, while other circuits would be similar to the arrangements of a hundred years ago. They declare that the courts have too many days of idleness but evidently overlook the convenience of a court session constantly. excepting for an occasional week aud a summer vacation. We doubt if this recomendatiou will strike a popular chord even it it is shown that a considerable sum might be saved the state. The Young Democratic Club will meet next Wednesday evening in a victory party and to discuss whether or not they will continue their activities. We certainly hope I they decide to keep on, for they ! have developed much ability in organization aud hi spreading the gospel of democracy. They can enjoy social events, study interesting economics and prepare to be a real factor in the next campaign and that ought to be program enough. All the new tax plans suggested | have some merit but we have not heard of any yet that permits the man who has real estate or who earns a profit to escape paying. Os course he should meet the expenses of government, so long as they are ki;,t withir, reason. The man: who has’nt any thing can’t pay, regardless of the plan. o— Willys Starts New Production Toledo. —(U.Fb —One hundred and • fifty men have gone to work in the | forge shop of the Willys Overland I Company for production of the first 15,000 new Willys automobiles. "No," sgid the producer, “we'!! shoot it as a closeup." The director objected, wanted to know why. "Simple," replied his superior.
