It was a long time coming but we did live to see three inches of rainfall in 24 hours. It proves costly to try to drive an automobile after partaking of too much of the amber looking Iluid. The Detroit Tigers are not going to let go of their lead in the American league, taste of victory too sweet for the Navin men. You can tell your friends that taxes in Adams county are coming down, “as to a certainity” Wimpy would say. The street department force in addition to keeping the streets clean, is removing the weeds which grow in the gaps between curb and walk. It adds a tidiness to the thoroughfares which every citizen admires. Good work boys. Attorney Genera 1 Cummings is quoted as saying that if Al Capone isn't a good boy he'll be sent to Alcatraz prison, out in the middle of the Pacific. The federal government is not monkeying with criminals and it behooves the tough guys to walk the line. Several Indiana cities are footing the civil city budgets with profits from their municipal plants. Columbia City and Logansport are two in this group and the tendency to relieve the property owner of a city tax is growing. Municipal plants also mean a saving to users in light and power rates and communities that own such enterprises have the advantage over those who do not. It probably is a sign of bravery to dive better than 3,000 feet down in the ocean, where the pressure is figured at 10 tons to the square inch, but the average laymen can't see the advantage of taking the chance. About the only uncommon thing noticed was sighting a 20-foot sea monster and everyone knows that's the only place where such freaks would be. What good would they be if they caught one, outside of exhibiting in a side show? Political writers attempt to analyze the outcome of primary elections in terms of the New Deal. Primary elections are generally decided on local issues and the personality of the candidates. Over in Ohio it was the popularity of Vic Donahey that won for him. Three times governor of the state and an astute politician as well, Donahey's victory is largely accreditable to his own campaigning. The large vote given him presages his victory next November. The proposed tax levy for Ad-
ams county Is 5? cents on the Inin dred dollars, or 8 cents nnder the rate payable this your. The budget has been reduced accordingly and every credit taken tor niiaceilauoous revenue and money obtained other than by taxation. The re- [> duced levy in the county's proposal is in keeping with the estimates made by the townships and other taxing units. Taxes, raised by levies on real estate and personal ' property are coming down and by the time final action is taken on the budgets and proposed rates the total tax bill will be a great deal less than that paid this year. j The National Housing Act should create employment among tradesmen and revive the building and material supply business throughout the country. With the federal government cooperating and underwriting the loans, property owners, if eligible, can borrow money from their local bank for making additions or improvements to their house or business building. Defining the act. President Roosevelt is quoted as saying. "For those who live in houses, those who repair and construct houses and those who invest in houses.” Soon the banks will set up the necessary financial arrangements and those who have been holding off from repairing their properties on account of lack of funds are invited to get in touch with their banker for details. Farm and city property come under the new government loan plan for re- ; modeling. -- !
