Several candidates are working for the Democratic nomination for auditor and the meeting of the county committee next Friday evening promises to be of interest. Tile event will be held in the court room aud will lie opened at eight p o’clock by Nathan Nelson, county chairman. 1 Looks like a lot of folks are not going to be satisfied until we have • a general strike over the country. ’ European nations have fought the same thing for some years and to the disadvantage of every one. Its J foolish and it seems needless for i compromises that are fair aud just • ought to be effected. I —— ’ It's a queer attitude that y few i art' taking because Attorney General Lutz holds that the law does not permit selling hard liquor by the drink. Every one knows that is true and if a majority want it otherwise they ought to enact such a law and not expect the attorney general to declare the law other than it is. Dost master General James A. Earley will be the principal speaker at a meeting to be held in Indianapolis next Friday evening, to be attended by about 1,500 workers. The Farley speech will be broadcast over four stations, inI eluding WOWO ami many voters I will hear this distinguished leader and chairman of the Democratic national committee, in the opening address of what promises to be an Interesting campaign. Tlie memorandum of Fred A. Wiecking, assistant attorney general. that the sale of hard liquor by the drink is illegal under the Indiana control law, is no great surprise. It does, however, add to the ronfusion existing as a result of that law and the attempts made at enforrement. Mr. Wiecking says the question of enforcement is up to the local police and sheriffs, which means very probably that nmst communities will get about the quality of regulation public sentiment demands, between this time and the next session of the legislature, when the liquor control law undoubtedly will be rewritten. — Indianapolis Star. o —

HOLLYWOOD. . . .—You II have ‘‘ to guess his name, but a certain Hollywood producer pulled one ol . his very funniest remarks one re- f cent week-end. I’m only telling you what they say. Maybe you know all about the Russian midnight Easter services, but my first sight of the unusual ritual was when Samuel Goldwyn staged one for "We Live Again”, the new Anna Sten film.- Fifteen hundred candles illumined the moviemade replica of a Russian countryside church. The chant of the singers—only the human voice is used In the ritual —rose in impressive volume. Food for the pashka feast after the celebration (prepared, incidentally, by Miss Sten's Ukrainian cheO was authentically Russian. Before it was eaten, priests and deacons kissed each other three times and then each member of the congregation. Later, the members of the congregation kissed each other. It was a master illusion. Long-suffering celebs will be glad to hear how a certain foreign star guards against one of the film colony’s most lucrative rackets—the inventory list on houses rented to motion picture people. WINS VERDICT f ROM HIl TERM William I’. McCracken Wins Decision From Senate Conviction Washington, July 9- IU.R> Wl1 ’ ham |>. MaeCraekeii. former assistant secretary of commerce, won a victory today against a 10 dt’T jail sentence imposed by the senate, when the district court of appeals held that the senate lacked jurisdiction to inflict such a punishment. The senate imposed the sentence after MacCracken failed to produce certain documents in connection with the airmail investigation. The court reversed the decision of the district supreme court dismissing MacCracktn’s petition for a writ of habeas corpus following his arrest by the senate. The decision was split, three members of the court holding the senate was without jurisdiction to inflict such punishment on MacCracken while the remaining two members of the court dissented from the majority view. The next step, should the department of justice so desire, will be a petition to the United States supreme court for a writ of certiorari. If the court grants the writ the case will be heard by the highest court. The decision threatened to have a pronounced effect on all future attempts of the senate or house to punish witnesses who fail to carry out commands by investigating committees.
