Charter Member of The Indiana League of Home Dailies. That last rain headed this way must have been blown into the lake. They put Dillinger’s sweetie in prison- yesterday and that’s what ’ the molls get for playing around with him. They're talking about a prosper- " ity wave in 1935 which sounds a lot better than saying it’s just around the corner. Auto plants are operating on nearly full time basis and the price of Cars is coming down. What’s so rotten about thaL? The republicans met, found everything wrong, demanded a change and then returned home finding that the old home town wasn’t such a bad place after all. They're attempting another Sally Rand of fan dance fame publicity at the world s fair this year. Must be part of the game in order to get the crowds. Why not try something new ? When A. R. Erskine, auto mag nate, committed suicide everybody thought he was broke. Now the government comes along and orders his executors to pay SBB,OOO in taxes on the estate. He could have ■ had a lot of fun with that. The movie producers may believe their own line, “Came the Dawn,’’ from the flood of protest made througiwmt the country - against salacious pictures filmed by divorced and quick-marrying . actors. The council will more than likely appeal the assessment made by the state tax board on the electric light and water departments of the city plan. We should at least be shown the method of arriving at such a valuation and have the facts. It’s our business and we must pay the tax if the law stands. Get a man down and he won't talk or sass back. Once give him the upper hand and it’s a different story. The same with the mass of people. Since the dark days of the ' depression we have made so much headway, that dangers seem remote and now some individuals have sufficient nerve to claim that American institutions are crumbling. Henry P. Fletcher, the new Republican national chairman is a good looking fellow, hailing from the old guard state of Pennsylvania, famous for its political control under Penrose and Vare. He also, is viewing conditions with I alarm and tries to paint a picture | of being scared. Anyone who serv-1 ed as ambassador to a foreign country should know that conditions in the United States are a great deal batter than any other place on the globe.
By the first of July, marking the first year of the collection of the gross income taxes, ten million dollars will have been utsiributed to the schools of the state and used to pay teachers. Now if we didn't have the income tax the money would have to be raised through a property tax. for school teachers can't live without pay. The July distribution will amount to more than four million dollars, equal to S2OO for each teacher. Father Ambrose Kohne of Goodland, an alumnus of the local school, gave tine spiritual advice to the graduates of Decatur Catholic high school at the annual commencement exercises held here. Father Kohne Is an able speaker and his message on education was well received by the audience. He cautioned the graduates, that in their search for worldly happiness and success, they should not forget their God and His. teachings. It’s going to take more than an expert bookkeeper's balance sheet and an embossed stock certificate to get listed on the stock exchange, following the passage of the mar ket’s bill. Anyone who went through the 1928 and 1929 orgies know there should be some control and regulation and the hew meas ure. which was signed by President Roosevelt yesterday is an act in that direction. Evidently no five hundred per (■ent increases on rubber key hole stocks are to be expected. — —— The mere fact that politicians openly charge tliat “American institutions and American civilization] are in greater danger today than! at any time in history.” is proof | that conditions are better and that I the danger of American governmen crumbling to pieces is over. When things were really black in the first quarter of 1933, true) patriots kept their mouths shut and : were afraid to openly charge that j our government might be near the | breaking point. Today we have re-1 gained our breath and things look brighter. We have confidence. The charge of the danger we face today is piffle, pure bunk and anyone with a grain of common sense will not believe it. o NOTICE —We are now booking jobs to combine. Would like to get l some blue grass. Steffen 8r05.,! Route 2, Decatur. 136-a3t |
