Local stores welcome you to the week-end feast of bargains and all join in inviting you to be here Saturday. One little touch of nature makes the whole world kin, to the credit of the parents of the quintuplets of girls. A most discouraging season for | the lover of flowers who has tried I valiantly to grow the blooms during these arid days. Graduation exercises will mean something to that Canadian father and mother wnen tney get their five girls ready for the commencement. The automobile concerns seem to be leading the parade in building finer products and through advertising creating a desire to own one that is hard to resist. Indianapolis had a bigger crowd for the auto races than Churchill Downs enjoyed for the Derby, so the capitol city probably will not swap its kingdom for a horse. — —- Theaters, swimming pools, bathing beaches, parks, and picnic grounds are among those things which Decatur offers titos e who seek places of recreation during the summer months. The check calling for $1,003,000 given to President Roosevelt for the Warm Springs Foundation, was printed on a piece of paper three feet long. Nothing short about that. Maine and Vermont are the only two states in a list of 14 that do ' not favor the new deal policies, according to the Literary Digest poll. Indiana stande with the President in supporting the program. Harry G. Leslie, former governor, will oppose Senator Robinson for | the Republican senatorial nomination. The party is more or less divided on Robinson and for sometime a movement has teen on foot to trot out someone against the' senator. Leslie will give battle. I it seems that the Republican | newspapers have started a drive I to kill the oil inspection bureau, howling spoils. For 16 years the Republicans conducted this department and always showed that A didn't cost the taxpayer a penny to maintain. The population of Decatur is either climbing pr more people are moving back to their former homes, there being fewer than a half dozezn houses for rent in the city. It’s an indication of good I conditions, although not so encouraging to the person who tries to find a house. City officials hope to obtain an appropriation from the Governor's commission on unemployment re-
lief for the payment of labor on several street improvements. Among the projects tt> be petitioned for are South Sixth street and the building of a new road in Hanna N'uttman park. It’s a fine thing to do and whatever can be secured in the way of a federal grant for employing men will be appreciated by those who are given work. The next major activity of government will be an attempt to stimulate heavy industries —which normally provide the bulk of employment, were hit hardest by de-1 pression, and have been the most lethargic in recovering from it. And the first step in doing that will be to unloose capital tor homebuilding and repairing, through Federal guarantees of mortgages. President Roosevelt has sent a special message to Congress to expedite such legislation. Experts estimate that it is possible to unloose credit to the tune of $1,500.000,000 or more in this manner. That money would go to painters, carpenters, -masons, plumbers, contractors. It would buy cement, steel, paint, lumber, roofing, electric fixtures. It would pass through a hundred great industries, creating jobs and opportunities as it went. It doesn’t take much imagination to visualize the extent . of its influence in pulling businesses ! of all kinds out of the doldrums. o f twenty Tears * AGO TODAY From the Dally Democrat File June I—Joe1 —Joe Donovan was badly ; injured in the 500-mile races Prof Thomason, noted palmist I from Kansas City, is reading for-' tunes at 215 south Second street. THE one trouble women have when making jelly is that their jams and jellies often fail to jell. Thus time and money are wasted. Now I offer you away that puts an end to jelly failures. This way is quick and simple. By it even a child of twelve can make a jell that experienced housewives might well envy. Jams and jellies will not“jeirunless they contain natural fruit pectin. The reason some fruit juices must be boiled so long is to concentrate this pectin. Fruits without pectin fail to “jell'* at all. Now a food scientist has discovered away to put up fruit pectin in powder form. Thus you supply what many fruits and berries lack. This powdered pectin is named Kwik-Set. 5 Great Advantages I Kwik-Set is a welcome gift to women who make jellies. It revolutionises jelly-making overnight.
