One might think that we were, if he swallowed all the propaganda against the '‘brain trusters’’ and I "professors” in the Roosevelt ad-j ministration. The same business men who have contributed heavily to the support of colleges, who have sent their children to institutions of higher learning, who have hired technicians and experts from the colleges to work in the research laboratories of their own business, and who have boasted about the American school system, are suddenly raising a, great outcry. They have discovered. it seems, that Mr. Roosevelt Is doing likewise. He has called on educated men to help solve part of his problems and to carry part of his burdens. And the result is a nation-wide squawk against the "impractical professors" of the Roosevelt ad ministration.. As a matter of fact, the number of professors surrounding Mr. i Roosevelt is comparatively small. Profs. Warren, Moley and Tugwell have been the outstanding ones. There are a few others. But their total number is very small compared to the -omplete personnel of federal executives. » But, even if it weie very large, » hat of it? Isn't it a good thing, just for achange, to get brains into government ? We do not recall hearing any outcry from the brokers and bankers when Harding imixirted ihe "Ohio gang", which settled down like a flock of vultures on the federal establishment and started picking it clean. We do not recall hearing any great outcry from misunderstood in lustrialists when important government posts were filled with j party hacks and political lame ducks, on the theory that they had li. ed so long on the public payroll that they had gained an unwritten committment to stay there. The business geniuses were not perceptibly shocked when corruption was exposed in high places; when Federal officials resigned their posts to represent wealthy clients in cates before the various governmental departments; when former Congressmen and cabinet members and party leaders opened up lobbying establishments at the seat of government. No, all those things were all right. But v*,en *he»e precedents were upset, and the President surrounded himself with a few scholars who had given their lives to the study of the problems they were asked to deal with, there arose a great outcry.—Pittsburg Press. The big event of the season comes oue week from today, the primary election. Candidates are busy this week and every one will do his best to convince you. Listen
to fair arguments but pay uo attention to last minute charges. Remember If there was any thing worth saying it should have been said when the opponents had the opportunity to meet It. Let's go through with what has been the cleanest primary ever held here, regardless of the large number in the field. The explosion of the big oil tank south of Huffton Sunday morning, followed by a fire of huge dimensions, caused much excitement over a wide territory. Many from here went over to see the smoke aud ruins. The loss is estimated at $75,000, which is something even for a concern like the Illinois Pipe Line Company. The smoke could be seen for many miles and the report that the city of Bluffton was being destroyed caused much alarm for a short time, until the tacts were obtained. The threats to kidnap Governor White of Ohio does not seem to worry that gentleman a great deal. Such an attempt would of course mean a war on all criminals that would eventually wipe them out. The war has about reached that proportion any way and the hunt for ihe Dillinger gang will go on .until the last man has paid for his crimes against society. John Kelley, mayor of Bluffton. and one of the popular men of eastern Indiana died yesterday, after a short illness. He was capable, honest and a good fellow to meet. His passing will cause much sorrowin his home town where he was held in such high esteem. Several new business concerns
J are under wav in Decatur, we are | unofficially informed. There is a i general stir that speaks well for j Adams county and Decatur and if a good crop at good prices conies through this year, we are over the hill and going full speed. There are several approached to the city that should he beautified j and cleaned, adding to the attractiveness of the town. The impressions visitors get when they enter a city, often means much. Civic organizations should be interested. Spring seems to be here and one way it is evidenced is that every j one is busy. Try to get some one ' to do some particular kind of work and you must take your turn. Keep it going. Plenty of work means a good community and business for every one. The death of Elmer Leonard, well known Fort Wayne lawyer, has shocked his many warm friends here. Mr. Leonard practised here frequently and was held in high esteem by members of the local bar. The annual clean-up is in progress. Are you helping to make it a success? By earnest cooperation that can be done with a record. o ♦ ♦ | Household Scrapbook —BY—ROBERTA LEE • ♦ Stains Stains can be removed from the fingers by using a little powdered pumice mixed with a few drops of olive oil.
