DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT FRIDAY. APRIL 13, 1931.
All REFUGEES ARE NOW SAVED I I I ” Last Six Men Os Arctic Expedition Rescued By Aviators ' Moscow, Apr. 13— <U.R>—The last six men of the Cheliuskin Arctic expedition, stranded on Ice for 58 days, have been rescued by airplane, it was announced officially * today. The news, which roused national pride, meant that aviators who had braved without glory for yeprs the > rigors of the Siberian wilds on routine jobs had evacuated 107 : men, women and childroll left adrift at sea when the icebreaker . Cheliuskin was crushed in the ice I February 13. The aviators saved not only all the refugees but, after they had brought off the last six today, went back and got the sledge dogs who hail been taken off the Cheliuskin . with its human complement. Some of the men were lashed to the wings of a little biplane in the last drive to save the refugees I from grinding, splintering ice that, under pressure at the beginning of the break-up season, had smashed , their little wooden barracks, their kitchen and the airplane landing field they smoothed oft on the ice far out at sea. The refugees comprised the crew , of the government Ice breaker Cheliuskin and members of the i | Wrangel Island meteorological exi ;‘edition, with wives and children. i The Cheliuskin took aboard the mission members who had been at Itarren Wrangel Island for three . years. Then the ship was crushed . in the ice two months ago today. Women and children first, then I | the ill and weak men, were evacu 1 ated. Last Saturday the situation beI came urgent, with the ice breaking . up, and the aviators Molokov, Slepnov, Vodopenov and Kaminin in a series of heroic flights in had weather brought off tho remainder by stages. From the coast they were sent on by dog sled for treatment and some, in addition to Otto Schmidt. I the expedition’s leader, were ex : pected to be sent on to American 1 Alaska for treatment. Schmidt has j left for Alaska by plane. o ■ Weed* and Ro«e» Any soil thnt will grow a good crop of weeds is good for roses, asserts a specialist nr the New Yert I Botanical gnrdon
ROOSEVELT IS WELCOMED HOME <CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) on my fish catch,” Mr. Roosevelt continued, oblivious of the feud between marchers and non marehers, "but I couldn't get any as I found you people wore gding from work to Wirt.
