The state highway commission will let new contracts totaling $lB,01*0,000 soon and that's something to look forward to as one of the » cures for the depression. Dan Flannigan of Fort Wayne • will make the principal speech at tlie Chamber of Commerce meeting Monday nip'll and that means you will hear something worth while. Don't miss it. We take it for granted that the c andidates all realize that only one can be nominated and that it will be up to the others to be good sports and agree that the best man won. So far we have not heard of any candidates for council and that is one of the very important boards to be filled. The men elected to these jobs will operate the city the next few yyars and we should be urging those in whom we have confidence to assume the duties. Don't miss the Chamber of Commerce banquet next Monday evening at 6:15 o’clock. The tickets are only fifty cents and the program will be worth much more. Every one who lives here should sitpiwt this organization, the only purpose of which is to belter conditions for*-every one. - The Adams County Democratic Woman's club will give a Washington Day dinner with a good program and plenty of enthusiasm to convince the most skeptical that these ladies are in earnest and will take a prominent part in tbe coming campaign. The President is being criticized by a few because of his quick action in nailing the air mail contract ransacking of the treasury but you can bet your last penny that the criticism would have been greater and of a much severer brand if he had not done so. While there seems to be a little red tape necessary to get the title to the local sugar factory straightened out, it will come through in good time and in the meantime contracts are being signed and plan.-, made to operate the plant here and that means so much to every one in this territ >ry. Twoaty years ago the World War which was to change the course of about every nution and the entire population was just starting, with Austria striking back after the murder of the Hapsburg heir. The changes since then have been the greatest in any. two decades of history and apparently the end is not yet. The basketball season is gelling hotter each week as we near the end and the tournaments begin to bring guesses from every fan. This year promises to be more interesting than for some years as there are a number of “dark horse" teams that may surprise you. If you want to forget your

1 troubles, plan to attend the contests the next month. Frank G. Thompson ot Bluffton J I is a candidate for renomiuation for representative in this district and due to the fact that he lias a splendid record and the fact that in both counties it has long been the rule ’ to give officials their second nomiI nation without opposition, his announcement seems to have approval from many. Work on the proposed building of forty-eight houses here is to proceed as rapidly as possible now and 1 the new addition will be one to atI tract wide attention. In the center j will be a beautifully platted park. J with the homes around that. It is 1 a governmental experiment and will be watenod with interest all over the country. The plan is now being written about in newspapers and magazines every where and every step will be carefully noted. I The death of Melvin Traylor, j leading Chicago banker, has brought sorrow to many who respected him for his integrity and great ability. He was one of the candidates in the Chicago convention when Mr. Roosevelt was nominated for President and had a dead lock occurred, would have stood an excellent chance of coming up as a dark horse. He was stricken with pneumonia a riionth ago and made a gallant light, suffering seven relapses before Uie end dame. i The CWA is to be gradually de- ! mobolized at the rate of ten per cent a week, but that is not alarm > ing as it might appear for while that is going on, the President is planning a permanent work policy r that will take care of the idle men. , There can be nothing more import j ant than providing work for those , willing and able. To do less is to 3 breed troubles similar to those . now destroying several European . nations. We are confident that in t another year this nation will be moving along smoothly and with a normal prosperity returned. S n , College Gets Songs State College.
