ANOTHER PROMISE KEPT: Announcement that $4,089,243.27 is being distributed to the schools of Indiana recalls another promise made a few months ago by Governor Paul V. McNutt and now fultilled far beyond expectations. In estimates made tor County I boards of Tax Adjustment, the I State administration attempted to I pri diet probable distribution of | state funds so that lull allowance could be made ami property taxes thus reduced. It was estimated ' that the distribution of Excise Tax Revenue would amount to $1.20 per pupil. When the distribution was made November Ist. the actual figure was $1.33 per pupil, an increase of more than 10 per cent. In these same estimates, the State administration pledged S2OO to each of 19.000 school teachers. It was believed that the number of “teaching units’’ would be at least 19,000 so that $3,800,000 would be required. Actual distribution of $4,089,000, however, means an increase of nearly 8 per cent above the estimate. Tlie State Board of Educaion approved a total of 2'1,010 ' teaching units.” One unit is allowed for every 35 pupils attending grade school and every 25 pupils attending high school. Despite this increase as compared to the 19,000 estimated, the promise of the administration that more than S2OO a unit would be distributed, has been fulfilled. The actual distribution will be $201.36 for each teacher. Without these millions of dollars flowing into the educational institutions of th© State, many of them would have to close. Today, Indiana is one of the three states in the. United States in which all teachers are being paid. Promises fulfilled, party pledges

kept thus has the Democratic administration kept faith with the people of Indiana. The government wauls to buy more hogs and probably know what they are doing, though the experiment so far has not worked out advantageously. Surely the over supply will be slackened soon to a place where a genuine market will make It profitable for those who engage in the business of raising pigs. In this part of the country it is the very backbone of the farmer s income und the low market has been disastrous. We hope a cure for the low prices will soon be discovered and administered. The League of Nations has lived fourteen years but has had a tough time growing or even holding its own. Whether it can go on that much longer depends much on the support given by those nations i which really desire icaco instead of war and that believe that every question and every problem except invasion of armed forces can be settled by arbitration. • — . .-=3 If congress meets the request of j President Roosevelt and guaran-1 tees the farm credit bonds, they I will be worth a premium and will be of wonderful value. The same i thing will probably happen to the I Home Owners Corporation bonds Iso that those who bought .them around eighty will show a nice ■ I profit. Os course a lot of the bills now • being presented to congress will never get out of the committee rooms and few of them will actu-I ally become laws but. they make good headlines and will be given; plenty of space if for no other reason than to show how dividedis the opinion of the law makers. - If Congressman Griswold can 1 | substantiate his charges that unfair advantage has been taken by unscrupulous, crooked guardians I of World War veterans, and we , presume he can for he usually, knows what he says before he | starts, there is no punishment ' much too severe. The milk war in Chicago hast closed without bloodshed und with- ■ out as much inconvenience as j might have occurred if it had continued a few days longer. The 1 matters in question will be settled by arbitration, indicating that some one has used his sound judgment , and good influtleucc. If you didn't get your rabbit you' are out of luck. The season for ' killing bunnies closed last evening ) and game wardens will keep a--for those who take advantage of the opportunities to kill these popular long eared animals, [ Join the crowd and attend the President's birthday party ball' here on the night of the 30th.
