The nation is going to follow the leadership of President Roosevelt. wonder the people like Presi-| d?nt Roosevelt. That smile of his can accomplish more than all the big sticks ever used in Washington. Six-aking of the country being on the road to recovery, reminds us of a squib we read the other day, in which the nurse said, “I think he's regaining consciousness, doctor; he tried to blow' the foam off his medicine." No reports of deaths from poisoned liquor over the holidays, which might be solace to those who believe that many indulged too freely in the intoxicants. The matter of drinking is largely personal and abuses will be stopped when society as a whole doesn’t think it swanky that everyone lias to be "lit" in order to get by. The assistant secretary of commerce returned a 150 box of cigars received as a Christmas present from a shipping company, with th'explanation that the criminal code did not permit the acceptance of gratuities. Where the shipping company made a mistake was in sending a sso box, stogies of that price almost coming under the classification of gratuities. Many of our subscribers are calling at the office and renewing their yearly subscriptions to the home paper. Wo are encouraged and are appreciative. We know our family of more than 3,000 subscribers take the paper for the news that is printed and we assure you that all efforts are directed to make it more interesting and entertaining each day. It's foolish to waste time and talk along the line that President Roosevelt is leading the country in the wrong way and as writers say to the “left.” He’s doing the job and has more interest in making good than anyone on earth. and from past experience there are ' a lot of systems and practices that need changing. True patriots are not fearful of the outcome. City officials have filed the petition to reduce the light and power rates of the local municipal plant. It is hoped that the petition will be acted on by Saturday and that the new and lower schedules can be put into effect with the January j meter readings. The public appreciates this consideration aud tine effort of tlie council and plant of-1 fu ials in seeing that patrons of the ! local plant are shown the advantages of municipal ownership. Tlie school units in Adams county will receive nearly from the first distribution of the state income tax receipts. The money! goes towards the pay of teachers. , the first payment being equivalent I to (204.36 for each teacher, base I [ on the average daily attendance in the grades and high schools. - The gross income tax is a means i through which property tax is reduced and if receipts this year per- j mit tlie expected S6OO payment it ( will go far to reduce school unit levies. It's worth trying. That something pretty substantial actually has beeu done to better the condition of the farmer is shown by the t'nited States bureau of agricultural economics crop recently issued in Washington This report shows that the value of the | nation's farm produce in 1933 jumped fully $1,000,000,000 more than the figures for 1932. Total value of all farm crops grown in the United States in 1933 is set at slightly better than $4,000,000,000! as compared with a 1932 valuation of approximately $2,879,000,000. It is worth remembering, too, | that this increase took place in! spite of diminished production—or. | perhaps, if the farm doctors at Washington are correct, because I of it. Total volume of crops for I the year was unusually low. In one ' way or another, farm prices have I taken a healthy boost. Whether this happened because of or in spite of the federal farm program, it is a good omen for the future. — Indianapolis Times. Checks received in this county this week by the different taxing units from state funds makes one think aboul future taxation. The old custom of taxing everything on real estate aud improvements is as out of date and unpoular as one of

the autos that has to be cranked. Through the stad gas tax, the county alone received more than $76,000. The city of Decatur received about $6,000 and the towns | of Berne. Geneva and Monroe also I came in for a nice slice of the gas ■ and license fee funds. No money I is raised by local taxation for the repair and upkeep of streets and roads and in a few years the legislature may also provide that township road bonds heretofore issued may be paid for out the highway funds, thus eliminating another local tax levy. With the teacher's checks paid from the gross income tax receipts, it can plainly bo seen that the new form.of taxation is to be by special levy and applied to those directly benefited. We would not be surprised to see the federal government pass a manu-
