DECATUR IS CHOSEN: Announcement has been made from Washington that the Interior Department after a careful survey in eight states, has selected this city for a home Iruildiug project, a model sub division, and $125,000 has been set aside for the purpose. Needless to say the selection of th s city for the Improvement by the government lias thrilled all of us, since this is lite first place chosen in the entire middle west and the second in the United States. Eor more than two months a dozen or fifteen local men have given much of their time in furthering the project, securing options, getting support from various organizations, arranging for utilities, taking estimates of cost and a hundred other necessary matters of information and data. The government was represented here by Edward L. Middleton. field director for the department, a splendid gentleman, who is sincere in his opinion that Decatur is the proper place for the trying out of the "subsistence homestead’’ plan. His report was approved by the heads of the department, by Congressman James J. Farley and by all others to whom 'it was i eferred. The building of from forty to forty-eight modern homes here will stimulate business of every kind and is bound to have good results, providing employment for many carpenters, brick masons, electricians, plumbers, plasterers and others. This is to be no ordinary factory addition, but a place for those who wish to own their homes and who can pay fifteen dollars per month to do so. From one io two ] acres of ground with each home will give the opportunity for producing a large part of the necessities by having an up-to-date garden. It seems a wonderful plan and one that will help this community, those who take advantage of the opportunty to ow n their own homes, attract attention of the entire nation and give us the chance to come swinging out of the depression, better than ever. Only a good town, composed of optimistic people, willing to hustle and step forward, could have landed this proposition. We are deeply appreciative and we know that every one here will do ther full

share towards making this subdivision the most attractive In every way to be found 'in all the land, one that will really be a , model and one that folks will come hundreds of miles to see. Decatur is unwhipped by the depression and is going ahead. We hope and believe that tho ■interest the government has taken In Decatur because of the general conditions and the attitude of the people, together wth the reduction in power rates just announced, will mean new industries for this community soon. It makes every thing Ideal and we shall lose no opportunities to take advantage, but remember the platform of this community is to take care of those industries already located here, use their goods, help them in every way possible and be loyal. Checks have been sent to Adams county wheat growers aggregating $7,332; the government will build forty or fifty houses here, expending $150,000; the public works pay roll for the county is about $7,500 per week; business is good and the tide has turned. The old wolf has left for the land of the pessimist. And along with the other things being done here to make you glad you live in Decatur or viciulty. don't overlook the reduction of power and light rates by the Decatur Light and Power Company. That won't be hard to take. Sure we're coming through the depression with our chins up. our chests out and smiles on our faces. Congressman Farley was the first outsider to congratulate De- | catur on being selected by the government as the location for a I model subdivision and he meant it. ■ He is fighting all the time for his district and is for every citizen in , every county, regardless of creed, color or politics. Christmas is near aud we are I sure ©very one is going to be merry and we are likewise confident that 1934 will be one of your happiest New Years. Indications that the next twelve months will be the best in a long time are ou every Land. Let's all plan to make the most of it. Now that the new wards have been fixed in Decatur, it becomes the duty of the county commissioners to fix the precinct bouuderies. which it is expected will be done at the January session. Then will come registration and the primary and a campaign of exceeding interest will be on. | You can still get your contribution to the Good Fellow club into the fund that will be used to make a lot of boys and girls happy over Christmas, but you shouldn't put it off any longer. ' Christmas shopping has reached 1 its peak and you can still find just ' the thing you want for any member of your family in the Decatur ' stores. f if we could just get in on the ' plans to locate airports in Indiana • anil locate a landing field here, wo • would be- flying. t i TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY From the Dally Democrat File , ♦ < • Lawrence Dilson is name of son born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
