CONNIVANCE IS CHAR6EDTODAY Minton, Public Counselor, Makes Claim of Propaganda Campaign Indianapolis. |„d, Oct. ti (UP> Connivance between privately owned public utilities and tbe Kepubllcan etato commute in a propaganda campaign against expenditures of the public service commieaion In Its rate reduction cases was charged today by Sherman Minton, public counselor for the commission. A record In rate reductions whereby the public can judge whether commission expenditures are justifiable will be the administrations answer to the chargee, Menton said. Criticism of commission expenditures have been directed particularly against the SB6 per diem being paid Mark Wolff, expert investigator imported from New York to ferret out information on wlikh rate reduction cases against utilities may be based. "it is true that we have an expert in the field aearchiug for some of the facts which go to make up reasons for r< duclng high rates and which have been hidden for so many years" Mento ndeclared. “A man qualified to search for these needles In the haystack must be an expert. If some of them are not brought forth the ratepayers of ■lndiana may know that they will continue paying excessive charges to the utilities. ‘tAt the expense of the ratepayers, utility companies employ experts at SIOO to $l5O a day. Mr. Wolff, the accountant working for th commission, is paid much less. “Inasmuch as some of this criticism of Wolffs employment has emanated from propagandists working for the Republican state committee and its circulation has been reported as receiving encouragement from the utility companies themselves, 1 will make ties commendation: "Let tiie ratepayers judge the worth of an effort to match the wits of keen utility aeeountepts. If critics block the effort, then surely they will oe willing to make 11l ir accounting to the ratepayers. "If this investment in expert assistance fails, it will not be because the public counselor and the state administration have avoided a duty We shall be willing to answer to the public. "If It succeeds, of course the investment then will be of little consequence, If we are to be blamed for trying something, we are willing to take it, but we will not be sidetracked by subtle propaganda." SITUATION IN STRIKE AREAS STILL SERIOUS (CONTINUED FltOM PAOE ONE) Illinois' spectacular coal mine war appeared a strong probability today as all efforts of state and local authorities have failed to effect more than a temporary truce. Bullet-riddled property of the Feabody Co.'s mine No. 43, scene of a sanguinary clash between rival union miners yesterday, was under guard of 334 Illinois national guardsmen under command of l,t. Col. Robert W. Davis of Carbondale. Twenty-two persons, mostly members of the Ijnlted Mine Workers of America, but including one woman, Mrs. Forrest Priest of Harrisburg. nursed gun-shot and Hying glass wounds as a result of a 15-hour siege of the mine early yesterday. W. C. Craggs, superintendent of the mine, announced that work would he resumed tomorrow. Responsibility for the violence here was plared on members of the Progressive Miners’ union, an outgrowth of the U. M. W. of A., and its hitter antagonist. Peabody has refused to recognise the progressives, and has displaced Its members with the older union’s

men. Preliminary federal Intervention through the NRA meanwhile, was an actuality today, as Donald R. Klchberg. chief counsel for that body, was en route to Washington to report to Administrator Johnson. on outcome of a conference at Springfield with Guv. Horner and representatives of the men ami op erators. A tentative basis has been found for a solution of the problef, Klchberg announced. WILL NOT PAY ENTIRE DEBTS (CONTINUED FROM TAOK ONE) instructed to make the alternative offers named, but it was understood. The lump sum payment would include principal and Interest. United Press Information Is that bar gold has been purchased over a period of many month* by an unbuyer In behalf of the British treasury, and that this would bp shipped to American treasury department at once If a lump settlement were made. V Skiff Hall of the Field Museum here is richer by, one placer gold exhibit. The gold was found in the craw of the duck oy Frederick Blaschke. SUNSHINE days on v your calendar How many days in the month do you feel your best? You can add to these sunshine days by aimply obeying nature’s laws. The first of these laws is regular elimination. Avoid common constipation by eating a delicious cereal. Tests show Kellogg’s AllBran furnishes “bulk” to exercise the intestines, and vitamin B to help aid regularity. AllBran also contains twice the iron of an equal weight of beef liver. The “bulk” in All-Bran is much like that in leafy vegetables.
