•' Disputes Article I On River Origin By MARTHA E. ROHR i Ft. Recovery, Ohio hi an article written by E. W. Hamer for the Wabash ''Plain Dealer," and widely reprinted In the local press, including "The Commer-cial-Review,' 1 Portland. Ind., he states that "the latest dlsppute over ' the source of the Wabash river 1 has been definitely settled by the ' I'nited States topographical sur--1 vey." Mr. Hamer continues that 1 said survey establishes a point 1 about four miles south of St. Henry i at the junction of two open drain- ' age ditches as the source of the i historic stream. 1 A conclusion so far at variance with the facts will never settle the dispute, even though based on the work of surveyors employed by the federal government. Those of us who have lived on the banks of the Wabash and in Its vicinity all our lives know that the river has traversed a course of thirty miles or more before crossing the MercerDarke county line south of St. Henry. Any survey that ignores the drainage system of northern Darke county must have been most superficial. The northwestern corner of Mississinewa township, Darke county, i was very swampy within the memi ory of many people still living in j the vicinity, and maps made a genj eration ago showed a little lake in Section Four. That region was known as "Hog Prairie," and less | than a mile away the school is still known as "Frog Pond School.”] testifying to the nature of theterrian. In later years that region | has all been drained and is now I under cultivation. It Is Easy to Trace It is an easy matter to trace the Roy few, S. Johnson xiL/ . DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1933.
course of the stream from the Perry Potter farm in the northwest suarter of Section Five, through Sections Five and Four to the point whore it crosses the county line just west of State Road 49 It then crosses said state road, cutting the corner of Sections 35 and 36, and again crosses the county line into Section Six. Allen towntaip. Its diagonal course across this township is the longest of any through the various townships it drains In Ohio; southeast across Sections 6. 8. 9. 16. 15. crossing the Cincinnati Northern R. K. in a region of high bluffs and picturesque scenery; it then reverses its course and turns northeast across Section 14, crosses the road into Section 11, of which it cuts the corner, then across the township line into Section 12 of Wabash township. I Please note that the name has stood for a hundred years, a tribute to the stream which drains it.) Through Sections 12 and 1 the river flows, then again enters Mercer county about twb miles east of Burketsville. Here the course is due north, and the stream carries a good volume of water. It traverses sections of Granville township. and crosses the west line of that township just north of Wendelin. From that point the nUenin claims the name "Wabash River" without apology, even on small scale maps. No Survey Needed The very names of the two open i ditches which enter the main | stream south of St. Henry, the Corwin joint and Spencer joint ditches, are proof of even their origin be- | ing in Darke county., The comi missioners of the two counties I have often been called in joint session in consideration of drainage problems involving the Wabash river and its tributaries. We have waded the Wabash in Mississinewa township, followed its course iu search of berries and nuts, and fished in it in every township it crosses in its course through Ohio. We do not need any federal survey to follow its course, for we have helped to pay for its bridges which carry us over it as we go on our way to call on friends and neighbors, and we know that the northern part of the township in which we were born still drains into the Wabash in a well established course. , o ft ft Test Y our Knowledge Can you answer seven of these test questions? res* before the Conterance on National Survey of Secondary Education. The meeting was held under the allspices of the George Washington University school of Education. Objects to "Huge" Idea » '’Educational literature, and the study and publicity given to the large high echool would lead one to believe that secondary education is largely a matter of compreheualve city high schools wi'h large student bodies, highly trained teachers and elaborate plants.” Dr. Gaumintz said. “As a matter of fact." he added, "the latest data available shows that two-thirds of the four year high schools in this country enroll fewer than 100 pupils." Teachers Too Young Dr. Gaumintz also criticized the policy which has placed the youngest, least experienoed and least paid teachers in the small rural high
school, ft Is these schools which impone the heaviest, most complex and most responsible duties upon the teacher, lie said, and therefore call for our best rather than our poorest leadership and support. "As we get awav from the mistaken concept that mere bigness means worth and success, v.’» shall be able to change the situation and secure and retain better leaders in these small schools."
