ENGLAND WINS I BOTH MATCHES > Vines And Allison Both Lose Tennis Matches To English > Roland G rros Stadium. Auteui, i France. July 21. - <U.R> England r made a dean sweep of today’s . .c eiling match-s of the Anglo-Am- , eri in Davis cup battle. Ellsworth Vines, t . S. national ; champion, proved no match for i Henry Wilfred I Bunny I Austin, the Englishman winning in straight, seis, 61.61. 6 1 Vines was able to score only single points in four successive games, the last three of the first set. and the first game of I the second set. Frederick J Perry won the second match, defeating Wilmer Allison of Texas, 6 1. 7-5, 6-4. Tlie crowd of 8.0(10 which was stunned by Vines' lack ol *»rni was fully as surprised by the straightset defeat of Allison. America's chances to win the right to meet France in the dial-! lunge round were scarcely "100 to 1", as one expert put It. The Americans would have to win tomorrow's doubles match and the two singles matches Sunday in order to enter the challenge round. This seemed an all but impossible; task, for Austin displayed enough tennis class today to give Allison a terrific assignment, and unless Vines displays an about face from ihe form shown in losing his Wimbledon crown to Jack Crawford of Australia, and in bowing in straight ; sets today, lie will prove no match l tor Perry on Sunday. o YESTERDAY’S HEROES Rabe Herman, Cubs, equalled National league record with three h ime runs, also singled, driving in I total of eight runs. Mel Harder, Indians, held Yanks to three hits. Frank Higgins, Athletics, singled I i witli bases loaded for winning run i j in 10th.
