CHICAGO TAKES SECOND PLACE Cubs Replace Cards In Runner-up Post; Win Seventh Straight —■ New York. July 13. (U»—.Ex'tending their winning streak to ' seven games, the Chicago Cubs reI placed St. Louis at second position |in Hie National league standing by ; beating Brooklyn, 5 to 3, while the Curds lost- to New York. The Cubs got off to a flying start with three runs in the first frame, resulting front two hits and three Dodger errors. They registered two more tallies in the fourth by virtue of singles by Demaree and Grimm and Hartnett's second double of the game. Guy Bush allowed the Dodgers eight hits, one more than Ray Benge yielded to the Cubs. With Byrne James replacing Travis Jackson at shortstop, NewYork snapped out of a seven-game losing streak and blanked the Cards. 3 to 0, behind Hal Schumacher’s, six-hit pitching, giving young Schumacher his sixth shutout of the season. The victory placed the Giants three games ahead of Chicago. The fourth-place Pittsburgh Pirates gained ground by nosing out Boston, 9 to 8. when Floyd Vaughn climaxed his batting spree by driving in the winning run witli a triple in the tenth inning. He drove in five of the Pirates runs with two triples, a double and a single in six tries. Boston tied the count in the ninth with an eight-run rally. The Pirates hammered Brandt, Mangum and Betts for 18 hits, while Meine. Chagpon and French held the Braves to nine. After one day in the cellar, t Incinnati pulled the Phillies back into the basement by beating them 4 to 1, sending the Reds into seventh place. Washington maintained its twogame American league lead over New York by trouncing the Chicago White Sox, 4 to 1, avenging Tuesday's defeat. The Yankees registered their fifth straight victory by beating St. Louis, 4 to 2. in the second game of their series. Ben Chapman led the New York offensive with four singles for a perfect day at bat, and his mate. Tony Lazzeri connected with a double and two singles. The Yanks made 10 hits off Ed Wells, while Johnnie Allen held the Browns to seven. St. Louis contributed two errors. Philadelphia kept pace with the Yanks by scoring its second consecutive victory over Cleveland, 6 to 4, after Jimmy Foxx started a three-run rally in the sixth with his twenty-fifth homer of the season. Boston also scored its second straight win over Detroit, blanking the Tigers, 1 to 0, by combing two walks, a sacrifice, a long fiy and a timely single by Roy Johnson for the lone tally of the game in the eleventh inning.
