In this depression the heads of, the majority of families have been j set back twenty years in savings and in income. Many of these I men have sons and daughters rang-1 ing in age from twenty to forty ’ years, who had expectations.of al- 1 lowances, gifts, and bequests. Now , the future of these young men and | women is totally dependent on their I own efforts. Intrenched wealth has largely disappeared. Month by month the percentage of insolvent estates increases in each community. The creation of new wealth will be the job of the generation that was just beginning to take hold when the crash came. The years that lie ahead will be a young man’s era in a vital sense. The social classes have been in a wgy that never; occurred before in the lifetime of; most people living now. Former ; debutantes whose photographs i wue sought by society editors are no v selling millinery and step-ins. They are likely to find eligible husbands in unexpected places. This revolution is going on right ' ruder our noses.—lmperial Magazine. Secretary Hull is at least in ■ earnest and his speech at the Lon-1 d n conference in which he urged : cooperation and the forgettting of : 'fish interests, was well received' 1 tiie delegates. It might be a good thing if he would remind them every few day a . Much depends on the results of this meeting. If the right attitude is taken the world can again become prosperous and the people happy. t. ... ... Decatur merchants who have been advertising recently, report excellent returns. If you invite the public to trade with you and you have what they want at a price that attracts, they will patronize you and it’s yolumn that counts in any business. Start now. Make up a program for next week and watch results. It seems to keep Rev. Conway of Muncie busy hunting alibis. Rei “iitly he figured iu a couple of (vandals and now is under arrest for transporting liquor. He told the federal officers who pinched him that it was a '‘frame-up’’ arid that the home brew belonged to a man whom he was givjng a free ride. The state police visited here, chocking up on driver's licenses.

They were courteous but left no doubt in the minds of those who pilot cars that they will do better by complying with the law. After all. that's proper. Why have a statute that is obeyed by a part lof the citizens and disregarded by [others? — The program for the Northern I Indiana Legion meeting to be held j here the 25th. will be interesting <nd will prove a delightful enter-, ' tainment for the soldiers and for ! every one else. These events are ; always worth while. The Home Loan bill is designed [to save millions of home owners : from losing their properties and if I put in operation without red tape and carried out as planned by the President, it will do that. Great Britain will pay the United I States ten per cent of what is due [this nation which is not much but I better than none for it at least [acknowledged that they owe us. Massachusetts is number eleven in the repeal column, having so voted four to one. Eyes of the nation are now turned toward lowa 1 where they ballot soon and which [ is reported doubtful. Some times we can get a lot of satisfaction in comparing the troubles of the other fellow with out own and often ours seem petty. The cool weather may not be seasonable but is comfortable and “durned" acceptable. o "twenty years AGO TODAY From the Daily Democrat Fite Decatur Shamrocks 14; Montpelier 4. Fair." Norman is a Fox contract 1 player, in case you didn’t know. He ' , has been loaned frequently to other : studios, hut now that Fox i« getting hack to its usual volume of produc- ' tion. you’ll see him more on the Tx>t. 1 From a half dozen people in Eng- , land, you hear how popular Sally is , , and what a good time she’s having. , One of my scouts writes of seeing i her and Harry Joe Brown dancing to the music of Bert Ambrose's new Mayfair band. Bebe and Ben Lyon •.were there the same night, also i Thelma Todd and Dennis King, Jeanette MacDo'hald and Bob Ritchie, Hal Roach and others. It I was like the Cocoanut Grove in Los i Angeles. From Claude Binyon comes the story of the wittiest motor-cop. Several days ago, the blonde and ( beautiful Mary Carlisle was flagged ' down for speeding. She smiled so winningly and talked so pleadingly that the officer finally put up nis : book of tickets. Just as she was about to drive 1 away, he halted her. i “Say” he inquired, “were you i one of‘The Gold-Diggers of 1933?’” : ( Mary shook her head. The officer snapped: “Well, you will be in ’34." i v HOLLYWOOD PARADE: 1 If Connie Bennett had any plans u to go out of town on her 5 weeks i . vacation, she’s given them up now. i

After months of attempts, a proc-ess-server finally has handed her the papers in that $30,000 commis- ' sion suit brought by the Joyce-Selz-nick Agency. The films are to get Mary Me- ' Connie at last. While Mae Murray j was filing suit for divorce yester- I day against Prince David M’Divani, 3 the former Chicago opera star, who is married to brother Serge, was 1 preparing to make her motion pic- I ture debut in Janet Gaynor’s new | picture, “Paddy the Next Best I Thing.” It came about this way. ; Both Miss McCormic and Director Harry Lachman of this film were ' proteges of Mary Garden. He persuaded her to take the role. Sometime this month, the mar- ! riage of Josephine Saenz and John Wayne will take place in the garden of Loretta Young’s Bel Air home. Loretta will be brides-maid. Incidentally, this young star has just bought the lot next to her property and is building a combination guesthouse and play-room. . . . That large group of film stars in the Cocoanut Grove was Mike Levee’s farewell party to Leslie Howard . . George Raft and Marjorie King were dancing to Abe Lyman’s music, too. ...
