Charter Member of The Indiana League of Home Dailies. Everybody says it’s hot. Y’ou haven’t heard the ice man growl about business. A newspaper office these days is about as hot as a potato chip factory. According ot the Atlanta Journal, Roosevelt is the worst President the pessimists ever had. Fourteen years of prohibition didn t sell itself or convince the American people it could be handled that way. Editors from over the country I attending the National Editorial , Association convention in Indianapo'is saw Indiana at its hottest. Invite your eastern friends to i drive to Decatur on their way to ; the world’s fair. Show them the ; town. i Keep young. You only grow old when you let yourself think that things are all wrong just because you can’t see through the eye of youth. The city couneilmen are getting a work out this week, holding sessions afternoon and night and on top of that must select a member of the school board in a four-corner-ed contest. Os the 329 delegates elected Tuesday. 246 will vote for repeal and S 3 will cast a ballot opposed to any change in the federal constitution. Regardless of differences on the question, there will not be any deadlock in the vote. If some genius could have stored the excess heat this week and then distribute it next Decernb-r, that ' would be getting a central heating plant at small cost As Brisbane would say, that might be done in the next thousand years. Cut the weeds on the vacant lots. 1 Now is the time to do it and City Health Officer Miller has given b gal notice that the work shall be done now. Weeds left co grow now will seed and do their damage 1 again next year. If you can’t look after the work vourself hire someone and have the job attended to at once. The fiftieth anniversary of the Rockford, Ohio, Press, is being cejebiaieii this week and pubiislieis who know the founder of the weekly. D. C. weekly newspaper. Mr. Kinder started the paper in 1883 and in the half century, despite trials and handicaps, he never missed getting out the weekly issue. We can’t change the brand of weather and desiring to be helpful can only suggest a few hot weather don’ts as away of keeping cool: Don’t fire the furnace; Don’t sit in your auto in the boiling sun with the windows closed; Don’t sit on a tin roof; Don't walk the railroad rails in barcfeet; Don’t wear your overcoat; Don’t drink moonshine liquor; Don’t worry about your business —Just advertise. Decatur has two swimming pools, two fine theaters, a good hotel and wholesome eating places, beautiful parks, shade trees and countryside, several miles of paved streets, a sporty golf course, flower gardens, inviting clubs, all for your enjoyment this summer <<nd at little expense. Do we really appreciate what we have in the oM home town, or does the field on the other side of the fence look greener? We can enjoy ourselves immensely with the diversions and places of recreation offered at our own door step. The nation lost one of its greatest citizens in the death of Cyrus H. K. Curtis, who through his great publications probably molded public thought greater than any publisher of his day. A man of refine- ! ilient and high character, Curtis, in I his magazines and newspapers, made readers appreciate the besT. | The success of his Saturday Evening Post is one of the marvels of I the age and for a nickel a copy he gave to the subscribers reading heretofore unavailable to the average reader. Improvements can’t be made without money. City finances, cut to the bone last fall, prevent the spending of much money on the new Nuttman park, northwest of Decatur. How much will you give to employ a dozen men to clean up the place, cut out some of the underbrush and build ovens for the hoy and girl scouts? Money talks and that's about the only way to get things done this year. A few dollars here and there would start the program and look at the pleas ure you’d bring to others. Shall we list your donation? If you can t take a vacation don’t feel that you are being deprived of the pleasures of life. The comforts of a home, although it is not located on a lake or up in the mountains can be enjoyed, if you really stop to think what you have. Running water, comfortable beds, yards, front porches, flowers, convenient kitchens, and refrigeration and other improvements which many cottages don’t have. We believe you can be happier at home than any p’ace in the world and during these sweltering days we can’t imagine anything more foolish than putting up with inconveniences which you would otherwise not he content with at home. Now if that isn’t kidding yourself because the old pocketbook can’t be stretched, we don’t know our business. — o ♦ * II Household Scrapbook -By— ROBERTA LEE ♦ — ♦ Georgette Georgette and crepe de chine should be wrapped in a Turkish towel while still damp and allowed to stand until it is of the right dampness for ironing. If this method is employed the material will keep its color longer. Eyelashes The growth of the eyelashes can b“ promoted by dipping a soft brush in pure lanolin and touching the edges of the eyelids with it. The application should be made before retiring for the night. Burned Dishes Use borax water for removing the brown stains on* dishes caused by scorching or burning. The dishes should stand in the solution for a day and then be washed with sorp. —— . Get the Habit — Trace at Home j
