GIANTS TIED WITH PIRATES New York. May 15 - <U.R>—Staging one of the greatest early-season cwtne-backs in major league history, the New York Giants, who tumbled c ose to the National circuit cellar last year, have executed a resolute right-about-face and now menace Pittsburgh's pennant aspirations. Even with player-manager Bill Terry benched by a shattered wrist since April 24. his thoroughly overhauled outfit hasn't been below third place this season. it held the lead twice, and now shares top ' honors with the Pirates. This come-back can be appreciat- • ed properly only by recalling the ' flounderings of the 1932 aggrena tlon under John McGraw and his successor. Terry. With the excel' tion of McGraw's tail-end team of 1915. it was the poorest Giant club since the early 1900's. It manat -,l to wind up in a sixth-place tie with St. Louis because of the Card-' September slump Unexpectedly, good pitching has been the biggest factor in the improvement. The Giants rose to a first-place tie with Pittsburgh yesterday by walloping the Pirates for the third consecutive time, 5 to 1. behind Roy Parmelee's six-hit pitching and aided by three Pittsburgh errors. Led by Hughie Critz ami George Davis, the Giants nicked Waite i Hoyt for nine hits, bunched for two runs in the first inning and
