MAJOR LEAGUES SCHEDULEDTO OPENTOMORROW American And National Leagues Start Annual Races Wednesday •New York, Apr. 11. (U.R) With tip' a hletes tanned and hardened by we-ka of training where the sun shines and the warm winds blow, 16 major league clubs will inaugurate an :ther baseball season tomorrow. The eve of the 1933 season found the owners in the most pessimistic train 1 of mind since 1920 when the B ack Sox scandal threatened to do awiy with the pastime. The owners, almost without exception, except a decided falling off in attendance and have prepared themselves for the shock by slicing salaries and operating expenses. This feeling of doubt is exemplified in the official communique issue I last night by President John A. Heydler of the National league. In the past Heydler. as it the custc.m with presidents, always confined ills pre-season announcements to a description of what a great game baseball was and how magnificently the people were going to respond to its lure. But this year's official bulletin intimated that ba eba'l's back was against the wall and nothing but the old eternal hustle on the part of the players would make it attractive enough to cause the citizens to part with

OPENING DAY New York, April 10.— (U.R)— Here's the way the major lea- ( gue baseball teams will open i ( their season Wednesday: American League Boston at New York. Philadelphia at Washington. Cleveland at Detroit. ( Chicago at St. Louis. National League New York at Boston, j ( Brooklyn at Philadelphia. Pittsburgh at Cincinnati. St. Louis at Chicago, their momy. This feeling of doubt on the part jof Heydler may be sadly misplai - ed. for his own National league promises to put on the closest race in years. And a wide open race, with several teams battling for the I ' pennant until the late days of the campaign, never has failed lo bring I out Hie customers. The National Teague appears as an even battle between no less than live teams Chicago. defending champions, Pittsburgh,’Brooklyn, St. Louis and Philadelphia. If these teams »;ay bunched until niid-August say, President Heydler and all the owners Wi l be able to give the depress- '! ion d laugh. Things do not appear so bright , for the American league for the world champion New York Yankees are likely to take charge before a month is gone and go on to a walkaway as they did in 1932. o See our ad on page 5 — E.
