THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER
V I 1 T I! TD! — J 1
As Jesus preached by the shores of Galilee, sitting in a boat that the multitude might hear him the better, he spoke the Parable of the Sower. Behold," he said, "The sower went forth to sow. And it came to pass that as Le sowed, some seed fell by the wayside and the birds came and devoured it. Other fell upon rocky ground, and sprang up quickly and withered away, because it was without roots.
~ Sundav School ? QUESTIONS ? THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER QUESTIONS 1. When and whr>r» did the incidents of today’s lesson occur? 2. Why was Christ preaching from a boat by the seashore? 3. What did Christ start at this time? 4. What is a parable? 5. Why did he adopt this manner of instruction? 6. Tell the Parable of the Sower. 7. What is meant by the wayside and by the rocky ground? 8. What is meant by the thorns and the good ground? 9. What effect did these parables have upon Christ's enemies? 10. Upon the twelve? ANSWERS 1. 'today's lesson has its setting by the Sea of Galilee In the autumn of 28 A. D.. the second year of Christ's ministry. 2. When Christ came to the Sea of Galilee from Capernaum and Galilee, he was followed by such immense crowds that it was impossible for him to speak from their midst. Many sought to be healed and helped. To escape them. Christ anchored a boat some distance from shore, where he could minister to them the better. 3. It was at this time that Christ started to speak a series of seven parables. 4. A parable is a story from which conclusions can be drawn. It was not an uncommon habit among the eastern peoples of his time to employ parables to illustrate their points. f. Christ was being pursued by his enemies w-ho twisted his ; every statement against him in jan effort to encompass his unI doing. By speaking in parables. 1 Christ prevented them from making direct charges as to his teachings. 6. A sower went forth and sowed grain. Some fell by the wayside and was eaten by birds. Some fell on rocky soil and perished. Some fell among thorns and was choked. A part found good earth and returned a hundredfold. 7. By the wayside. Christ meant the people who hear the teachings of God and yet are so unstable that they fail to follow them. By the rocky ground is meant those who are weak and cannot withstand trial. 8. By tlie thorns are meant people who hear the word but give themselves to dissipations and indulgences and quite forget it. By the good ground Is meant those who receive the word and I prosper thereby. 9. His enemies were confounded, since they were left to put any interpretation upon the parables they saw fit. Yet they could not twist the meaning of Christ into charges of plasphemy. as they hoped to do. t 10 The twelve questioned Christ as to his meaning; and when they were alone, he expounded to them the lesson he meant to teach. "And other fell among the thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it so that it yielded no fruit. But there were other seed that fell upon good ground and yielded fruit, growing up. and increasing; and it brought forth, thirtyfold, and cixtyfold, and a hundredfold.” And Jesus said, as he concluded the parable: "Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” So his listeners departed.

er. Otis Shlfterly. Worship with sermon by Rev. M. W. Sundermann, Thursday night. o Antioch M. B. C. Church Rev. Simon Moore, pastor Sunday school. 9:30. G. H. Bright, supt. Arthur Fosnough,
When they were alone with him, the twelve apostles asked him of the meaning of what he had spoken. Ard Jesus explained to them. “The sower soweth the word,” he said- "Those who are by the wayside hear the word. But it falls upon unfertile minds, and Satan comes and destroys it. So it behooveth them nothing. It falls upon rocky places, but these minds and hearts are shallow, and it soon dies.

"Some of it falls among the thorns. Those are the ones who give no heed to the word. They are sinful and lustful, and care not at all for the word of God but give their time to deceitfulness of riches and the things of earth. But there are those who are good ground. When the word touches them, they enrich and magnify it, and it prospers and spreads touching others a hundredfold.”
