rope, they suddenly turn their eyes to Eng- , land. Result—Elizabeth Allen, London star, will arrive here February 15, and will go rignt into “Service,” Clarence Brown's next picture for Meti ro • Goldwyn - i Mayer. The immedil ate availability of the English

actress is an attractive argument in her favor. Samuel Goldwyn has had Anna Sten studying English since March without using her in a single picture. Universal had Tala Birell coached for 18 months before they gave her an assignment. This is expensive and Hollywood has an eagle eye on the cost sheet nowadays. Some American fans are already acquainted with Miss Allen. She played in “Service for Ladies,” I which was released over here, and which already has brought Hollywood contracts to two of its players. Benita Hume nnd Miss Allen both signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. And this studio has a third English actress in Diana Wynyard, who gave such a moving performance in “Cavalcade.” That outburst of tittering at “The Sign of the Cross” the other night was caused by Jay Strauss’ dry witticism. On the screen the picture was neai*ing its climax. The beasts were being loosed in the arena. Suddenly Jay observed: “And I suppose if a martyr eats a lion, that’s news.” HOLLYWOOD PARADE. Elsa Maxwell is the latest addition to the Pickford-Fairbanks-Cooper - Countess Frasso - Stewart European expedition. They’re all hepped over the winter sports idea. Douglas Fairbanks measured Mary Pickford for skis. Know how it’s done? Stand up and reach your arm above you. The ski should measure from your toe to your finger-tip. Otherwise you’re likely to do a one-and-a-half. Most likely you’ll do it anyway. Lillian Harvey is taking a house in Beverly Hills. Yes. someone aiready has called it “The Harvey

House.” This star is one of the few Hollywood newcomers to rent a big place. Both Peggy Hopkins Joyce and Benita Hume tell me they prefer apartments. . . . Fat, goodnatured Lionel Belmore will play the poet Homer in Jesse Lasky’s production of "The Worrior’s Hueband.” . . . And did you know they almost got Will Rogers to do the part of the herald in this picture. . . . While the matter was under , discussion, Rogers visited Lasky on the “Zoo in Budapest" set. The comedian watched a couple of elephants stuff down food. "You know, Jesse," he drawleo, “to me, elephants are like women. I like to watch ’em, but I don’t like to feed ’em.” Were the members of the Hollywood Fire Department amused when Jack Oakie, Lyle Talbot and Charles Starrett undertook to direct the putting out of an apartment house blaze the other evening? . . . Julie Carter does a part in Universal’s “A Kiss Before the Mirror." . . . Winter or no winter. Helen Hayes and Charles MacArthur plan to motor east before they take that South Sea trip. With the opening of “Cavalcade,” Hollywood is once more in the throes of the argument about the necessity for hokum in pictures. A leading defender of “Cavalcade” and pictures of the sort is Leslie Howard. “The trouble is,” Howard tells

me, “they have not, aimed high enough for the public. Any picture with an o u t s t a n ding spiritual quality will be a success and will appeal to the whole world. ‘Cavalcade’ had pa tri otism. I think ‘Berkeley Square’ should find a wide public because the whole world likes to believe that love is un-

(lying, persists after death. The tirodueers haven’t asked my advice, but I think ’The Passing of the Third Floor Back’ also would qualify for spiritual appeal. “And let us, first of all, get away from realism. Romance is the province of the theatre.” Any arguments? DID YOU KNOW That Roland Young was named after his grandmother’s canary bird, which died about the time Young was born.

[lnsanity hearings increased heayily during the year with 15 defendI ants adjudged of unsound mind. Few Divorces i Only nine absolute divorces were ! granted during the entire year, five to wives and four to husbands. | One limited separation also wjs ■ granted. Marriage licenses issued showed Za great predominance over divorces. as Hie county clerk's office issued a total <tf 214 licenses, as against the ten divorces granted. : Dance Saturday Night at Paradise Gardens.
