DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1932.
[POLICE GUARD ENGLISH HEADS FROM RIOTERS CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE ; .......... | had spikes or nails in them. Police dispersed a .crowd that tried to rush the doors of Marylebone police court today for the hearing of eight of those arrested yesterday. Only one of the accused was an out-of-town marcher. Quiet was restored last night after a tumultuous afternoon in which thousands of police battled with a crowd estimated at nearly 100,000 in Hyde Park. The rioting : centered about the Mai Hie Arch, j entrance to the park, where ; mounted police rode down the I crowds and foot police, wielding J truncheons, were met with clubs l and stones. The disturbances were renewed i briefly late last night at the ' Marble Arch, but the crowd soon , dispersed, chiefly because of a chilly rain. It was announced that the government is introducing a bill in parliament on Nov. 8. mitigating | somewhat the rigorous application |of the means test. The means test, by which applicants for rei lief must prove their utter de- | pendence on the dole, is one of ! the chief objects of the derr.onj strations. The rioters arrested yesterday ' were given various sentences in : court today ranging from small ' fines to six months in prison. | One was acquitted. o CHICAGO GRAND JURY TO PROBE I FROM PAGE ONE the emergency commission, decried i the failure to pay taxes. j City attorneys asked tax judg- , meats against two more large loop i structures owing more than $300.OOD in taxes. Receivers were askled for eight structures, six of them loop buildings and the others large , apartment buildings on which big tax biiis aie long overdue. The consequences of the strike of tax payers have been felt rm. fete. Anil ; Fisher & Harris, Decatur Appleman's Grocery, Decatur Bower Grocery, Preble L Spitler <& Son, Willshire, O. throughout the city and county governments. Suffering lias been frequent among unpaid teachers, fire and policemen and civil workers. Another result disclosed today was inability of the county to pay the pensions it is obligated to provide for needy widows and their children. Records of- the county welfare bureau showed 1,900 mothers on the pension roll and 5,680 applications for pensions. The mothers are allowed pensions only upon proof of dire need< But due to lack of tax payments Hie county has been without funds. Mothers ami the county roll have received nothing since last June. The payments provided by law total about SIOO,OOO monthly. More than ha'f a million dollars is now owGl the pensioners with little hope of relief unless the tax strike is broken.

AL SMITH ASKS FULL SUPPORT CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE ' "A grave injustice to whom? To ’ the taxpayers? That is the gross " injustice, because there gre men receiving money from the federal government today that not only s never left this country hut never 3 saw any kind of service, were > never injured in the service, or have -J no disability directly traceable to E the service.” < "Let us give the speech another '! look,' ’he continued. “He says ‘it can be demonstrated that the tide ■ has turned and that the gigantic . forces of depression pre in retreat.’ - Why, the real fact is, if you take : j New York as a barometer, and it : ought to be a fair one, there are 1 more people out of work today than “ there were at this time a year ago.” The former Democratic candidate
attacked the tariff as keeping goods out of the country, pleading that "the only way they (foreign nations) can pay us is in goods.” "And the funny part off it is," he continued, “that all the high administrative officers in Washington refer to the plight of our neighbors abroad And when they are sinking and calling for a life preserver, tl;e national administration throws them an -irnhor." Smith criticized the administration's handling of the bonus army, and said it was the place of the President who as commander-in-chief of the U. S. army, to go out and talk to them and explain the situation of the finances of the country with respect to the claims they were making.” In defense of his Newark speech, in which he charged that the Republican campaign management had been responsible for “bigotry” in the 1928 campaign, Smith said: Colds that Hang On Don’t let them get a strangle hold. Fight germs quickly. Creomulsion combines the 7 best helps known to modem science. Powerful but harness. Pleasant to take. No narcotics. Yotfr druggist will refund your money if any cough or cold no matter how long standing is not relieved by Creomulsion. (adv.>
