COV.ROOSEVELT ‘ IS WAY AHEAD Literary Digest Poll Shows Democratic Nominee Is Gaining Governor Roosevelt is running way ahead of President Hoover in the Literary Digest's presidential' "straw” vote poll. Nearly 2,000,000 I votes are listed in ’he fenrth week i of the poll. Os the 1.983,634 votes tabulated President Hoover receives 781,431, or 39.39 per cent, Governor Roosevelt. receives 1.062,087, or 53.54 per cent., and Norman Thomas 106,352, oi 5.36 per cent. ot‘ the total cast tp date. Eighteen new states are reported in the current returns. The onlyone of this in which Hoover is leading is Vermont. Roosevelt is shown capturing the other seventeen— ( Arizona. Arkansas, Delaware, lowa, Idaho. Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana. Michigan. Nebraska, Nevada, i New Mexico, North Dakota. Ore-1 gon, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. The Hoover strength is confined to the six New England States, which he is shown carrying ‘solidly, and New Jersey. Roosevelt is leading ijn the other thirty-one states from which returns have been received and tabulated so far. Hoover is indicated gaining j strength in California, Illinois, In-1 diana. Maine, New Hampshire, | New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and |Rhode Island in all of which states' |he shows increases over his last week's ratio. Returns front Massachusetts this week show a decrease in his percentage of the total vote there. i In an analysis of “how the same i voters voted in 1928“ Roosevelt apj pears to be obtaining more than 'one-half of tits vote from former | _ Republicans in California and Michigan while in the nine other of lowa. Kansas, Nevada.' “North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsyl-i ivania, South Dakota, Wisconsin atidi | Wyoming he has more votes from I former Republicans than be has 'from former Democrats. The same analysis reveals that jlßoosevelt has inerased his inroads] jinto Republican ranks of four years

ago throughout the nation, gaining i 139.64 per cent, of his entire 1 (strength from former Hoover ad(herents this week as against 37.96 ' per cent, in last week’s report. i Roosevelt continues to carry Cali-!: t'ornia, the home state of the Presi- 1 dent, by a lead of nearly 2 to 1.1 He is ahead also in his own state of New York by a vote of 156,447 i to 145,554. Calculating the current returns on an electoral college basis, Hoover wou'd receive 57 votes and Roosevelt 356. Massachusetts leads the Republican column giving 58.09 per cent of I its vote to the President, taking the lead from New Hampshire which had this rank last week. Roosevelt is indicated receiving a clear majority of all votes cast over all six other presidential aspirants in twenty-nine of the thirtyeight.states reported this week. Evidently the Socialist candidate is going to poll a very large vote —for a Socialist candidate. The Thomas total of 106,352 in this week's report is composed as follows: "Former Republicans, 48,945; I former Democrats, 24,354; Sociallists, 11,547; former Socialist-Lab-lorites, 22; former Farmer-Labor-ites, 15; former Prohibitionists, 25; former Communists, 80; “Did Not Vote,” 21,364. “His percentage of youthful firstvoters who presumably dominate the ‘‘di:’not-vote’’ column is 20.09. Hoover’s ;s 12.09. Roosevelt’s is 14.46. Youth givisF Thomas one-fifth of his ballot-strength. I His percentage of gain from ReI publican votes is 46.02. Roosevelt's lis 39.64.
