Governor Roosevelt Leads President Hoover in Literary Digest Poll to

Roooevelt. f Democratic candidate for President of the United States leads Presi 'dent Hoover in the Literary Digest's ["straw" poll this week, the Demo-: Icratic nominee having a greater! number of popular and electoral l votes to his credit. E’even states are listed this week in the Digest's poll and based on I the number of popular votes re- j ccived by both candidates, Roose-; velt is credited with 135 and Hoo-! ver with 93. | More than 200,000 votes have! been cast for the two presidential ’ nominees. Roosevelt has 102,185 i and Hoover 10(1,323. “The significant feature of the poll is that nearly 40 per cent, of I Roosevelt’s strength is coming from former Republican voters as' against nearly 45 per cent, from i Democrats while Hoover is gaining only,slightly over 6 per cent, of this votes from erstwhile Demo-1 crats and SO per cent, from Republican adherents, according to an! analysis of “how the same voters ■ voted in 1928.” / “On tile basis of the current returns each of these political rivals is carrying his opponent's home state. Roosevelt is leading in California with 63.08 per cent, of tile states total vote while Hoover leads Roosevelt in New York with 17,22 per cent, of the state's vote, as against Roosevelt 43.46 per cent., "Roosevelt continues to lead Hoover in Pennsylvania by a 10 [ per cent, margin, gaining over 46 per cent, of his strength here from Republican v ters at the last quadrennial election. "The returns from Maine show an opposite trend from the recent I gubernatorial election there. Hoo-1 ver is carrying the state by a per-! |centage of 55.15 to Roosevelt's 40.44 altho Roosevelt is drawing more of his votes from Republican ranks than* he is from Democratic. “Ohio gives Roosevelt a clear majority ot the state's vote with the President trailing with 42.12 ter cent, of the total tabulated so far. In Illinois and Indiana, the Democratic candidate also has a majority while his Republican rival is polling 43 86 per cent and 41.17 per cent, respectively in these states. "Similar to last week's returns, in none of tlie eleven states reporting is Roosevelt shown obtaining less than 25 per cent, of his strength from the Republican columns while Hoover does not obtain more than 8 per cent, of his current votes from Democratic partisans of four .years ago.
