Then Abram became Abraham and Sarai became Sarah. Isaac was married to Rebekah and had two sons, Jacob and Esau. Isaac remained >n the home of his father until after Abraham's death. Then a famine fell upon the land.

Isaac moved his followers to Gerar, a Philistine city ruled by King Abimeiech. The famine grew worse and Isaac was preparing to go down into Egypt, as his father had before him. But the Lord appeared to him and ordered him not to desert the land which had been promised him. Isaac remained and his crops and herds prospered: but the Philistines grew envious of his success. t

To harass Isaac and his followers, the Philistines filled up his wells with dirt and stones to that his flecks suffered. Then Ring Abimeiech ordered him to leave. “Go from us,” said the ruler, ‘'For thou art much mightier than we.” So Isaac summoned his people once again and departed from the city but he went down into the fertile valley which was not far from Gerar.

Water must be had so Isaac set his men to work and dun a new well. But the herdsmen of the valley fought for it. So Isaac named the well Esek, because they contended. The second well, for which they fought, he named Sitnah; but the third they dug unmolested, so it was named Rehoboth. Then Isaac knew that he had come into his own, so he settled at Beersheba and erected an altar to Jehovah.
