I • « The Old Tax Problem I Editor Democrat.:Please publish the following which I notice in a paper I read: I pay taxes on a small farm in Indiana and under the present tax menace it is a problem to me to know how to 'ever own the place, j Twice have I been driven away from it because of too much tax. both tints to the city for employment. This I might say was my best farm relie'. and this telief would last only so long as 1 was in the city. When at the shop at work I found my city workman facing the same tax conditions in trying to pay for a home, taxed for more than it is worth. This comparison of conditions I proved to me that wherever you are the tax machine will crush every ef- | tort you make to provide a home , for yourself and family. This feeling of*unre»t and doubt can be noticed wherever one goes for as taxpayes we are all in the same class. The wife of these taxed to death faimers can also tell quite a story of her activities and manner of helping to feed the tax machine. You will find her in many cases workin; away from her home and household duties, perhaps in some I canning factory, picking chickens at I some produce dealers’ place of bus- ’ iness, or in some tomato field gathering tomatoes, maybe she is 1 under the hot summer sun helping ! in the hay field. Sometimes you I may find her picking strawberries i or perhaps in a cigar factory. At ! any rate it seems to be required of her to vacate iter household duties and work tor the interest of the dest: nctive tax evil. A news item appeared in some paper recently stating that a foreigner visiting soviet Russia would, of course, be shown the best side of life in that country. I have no idea concerning the true state of i s in that land, but will venture
> to say that if some distinguished I gentleman fiorn Russia were to visit this country our great “engineer” Herbert in company with Andrew would escort the gentleman dov.n Wall street in New York city and ask him to note how prosperous we are in America. “A patient farmer" o ♦ - ♦ Modern Etiquette ' ROBERTA LEE ♦ (U.R) -♦ | Q.
