' 4 - 0 Old Name Retained There is a district on the west coast of Africa still known today as Songliay. The t ante is the remnant of a great negro empire that once flourished in Northwest Africa, near the Sahara desert. This empire is thought to have had universities and astronomical observatories, wealth and pageantry. Now it is only a name. But the name lias been carried overseas to the South African basil and persists there long after its origin lias been forgotten.—New York Herald Tribune. o CARD OF THANKS We wish in this manner to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the neighbors and friends, those who sent floral offerings. and all those who so kindly assisted us during the illness and death of our son and brother Mervin. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hahnert and Children. o “Fairy” Only in Name Fairy rings are rings observed In pastures, distinguished from surrounding vegetation by being either barer or more luxuriant, and attributed by the peasants of western Europe to the dancing of the fairies. They are now known to be occasioned by the growth of certain kinds of fungi, which, proceeding outward from 41 center, render the soil for a tune unfitted for the nourishment of grass, but later fertilize it by their decay. o — Not Actual Tapestry The Bayeux tapestries, the marvelous work of art done by the wife of William the Conqueror, Matilda, and her ladies, telling the story of the conquest of England, is the most famous of all tapestries, yet is not really tapestry at .all. The designs are done in outline upon the cloth and not in the solid stitched effect which constitutes real tapestry. — o Seasonable Christinas A white Christmas refers to a Christmas day when it is snowing or when the ground Is covered with snow.

EDISON'S DEATH RECALLS LETTER Shamokin. Pa., —(UP)—Thomas Jiva Edison's death revived memories of his work in establishing ' the first municipal lighting system | ever operated in Sunbury and the second plant here about 50 years ago. Edison himself recalled the initial lighting projects in a letter written ; a resident here in 1914. "Sunbury was the first three wire electric lighj stations in the world where overhead conductors were used through the streets. It started op ration of July 4. 1883” Edison I wrote. "Shamokin was the second stai tion of this kind, hut I do not recj olect the date it was started in operation-. although it was not very long a.ter the Sunbury plant was started. “Although these were the early | pioneer plants of the three-wire system and were the source of considerable anxiety and care to me and the men I had working with me, my recollection of the days in whiq-h they were installed and started have always -been pleasant ones, the great inventor wrote.

A new encyclopedia was stolen I from the T oy Lake school and al 1926 set left in its place. Practically ■ every school in Kane County, Illi-1 nois, has been robbed, and inten- I sive theft has been reported in Walwo th and Waukesha Counties of th? adjoining state as well as McHenry County, Illinois. One book company has offered a SIOO reward for capture of the thieves who have evaded several traps set by authorities.
