STATE PLANNING MORE TRAINING FOR CHILDREN California to Change Program For Physical ' Defectives SACRAMENTO. Cal. — (U.R) —I More and better training for physically handicapped children Is being planned by California education authorities. With the completion of a build- 1 ing program, special state schobls will be able to take care of ap-j proximately 300 deaf children, an increase of 30 per cent. Based on two years of study, these children will be launched on a new course of training covering j 12 years of instruction. The new course is to be based ; i principally on the importance nf|, I the use of language in every way l I inasmuch as the child's future L success is "governed entirely by' I his ability to use and comprehend I ■ English." The policy for the deaf is to j make the child's “outside the | I classroom life" a time for instruc-1 ! tion. By this means it is hoped to j | give the child the highest level of: ' mental development supported by. a sound character and body. Special attention also is to be I given to the training of the blind and particularly to their placement after leaving state schools. I With this in mind a special I I state committee is to be appointed i to study the aptitudes and limitations of the visually handicapped l child, and survey the opportunities ’ offered by various committees in 1 the way of placement to permit the employment of the graduate so that he may be independent. —o “Muskegon** Tl>e name ''Muskegon’’ is nn OJibwa Indian word meaning, according to most authorities, "marshy water" or “wet prairie”; one authority, however, gives Its meaning as “Tamarack," from the abundance of these trees on the river banks. There Is a popular m'th that an Indian dropped his musket Into the 1 water from his canoe nnd, as it dis- I appeared, exclaimed ' Musket gone.” —Detroit News.
