STATE TO HONOR SURGEON FOR ‘WINDOW’WORK U. S. Army Doctor Made Digestive Experiments 100 Years Ago Prairie Du Chien. Wis., Sept. 11. i —(U.R) Dr. William Beaumont, U.! S. Army surgeon who studied digestive processes through a "window": in the stomach of Alexis St. Martin a century ago, will be honored by a memorial. State physicians have contribut- j cd to the fund, providing a huge ! boulder of Wisconsin granite bearing a bronze placque briefly describ-1 ing, his -celebrated research here at! Fort Crawford, an early frontier ■ outpost. St. Martin, a French Canadian | voyageur for the American Fur j Company at Mackinac was wound- j cd in the abdomen in 1822. Dr. | Beaumont. then stationed at Mack-1 Inaf, attended him. The wound healed, leaving a valve-like opening which could be depressed to give an. unobstructed view and access to the interior of the stomach. When the army surgeon was j transferred to Fort Crawford he hired St. Martin and brought the man and his family here in order

'to continue his studies of digestion. Beaumont's experiments included | removal of gastric juice from St. j 1 Martin’s stomach and the suspen-i j sion of food in Uie stomach through i jthe opening. The gastric juice was! i placed in vials with similar foods., and maintained at stomach temp- ! erature. while the action was compared witli true stomach digestion. ' Sometimes the process made St.-' ■ Martin angry. Then it was that ! 1 jthe doctor observed an unusual I I amount of bile mixed with the I I food, concluding that violent das-! 1 I sion affected digestion noticeably. I He reported that St. Martin, who!' | lived for 58 years after his accident, j was a hard drinker. He was agree- ; ' able to taking food through the .stomach opening, but insisted on 1 j drinking his whisky. I 1 o Pheasant Kills Bull Snake Edholm. CHURCH GIVEN I WORLD'S MONEYi ’ I Paris. Sept. 11. —(U.R) Perhaps no j other church in tile world receives! such a diversity of coins and bank-j notes in its collection plates as does the American Church of Paris which dedicated its new $1,000,000 edifice this week. • As many as 14 nations are often I represented in the gold, silver. ! bronze, copper, and paper money found in the offering. Natura iy. most of the collection consists of French money, from coppers up to 1.000-frarc notes. Five franc notes, which are wo-th about 20 cents.’ are in the majority. Many American coppers find their way into the collection plate, along with the nickels, dimes, quarters j and dollar bills. Next to French 1 and American banknotes those from! Belgium are most numerous. Money from England. Switzerland, Italy, and Germany is very frequent, while the currencies of Sweden. Bulgaria, Rumania and Portugal are seen, but less frequently. The explanation for this assortment of coin in the church! collections is simply that the Am-1 erican tourist on going to church I in Paris decides to get rid of all | of his foreign small change and the i American church is the beneficiary . o Island Falls Man All-Around Veteran Island Falls.
