In New York City for the past several days you could buy your wine and champaigns in bricks in a first class shop on Fifth Avenue. You were told to dissolve the brick and drink it quickly or it would ferment which of course most folks followed adversely. Bootleggers tried to "horn in" on the deal but failed and new officers have raided the shop. Salesmen have been working the game throughout the country the past several months with the , same deal, claiming to represent a California grape juice company and have, we understand, canvassed Decatur the past week or two. They certainly do beat the laws if they want to. If the juice is not fermented when sold they will probably have a tough time convicting any one for violation of the prohibition laws, so there you are. Everybody wants good government, good schools, good courts, good roads and the like. But very few people want to pay taxes and it can be truthfully said the great majority pay taxes because they have to and not because they feel they owe a debt for the privileges they enjoy. Our tax system does need revision, but every attempt to improve it has been balked by some selfish interest or another. We have seen it time and again, the last time being less than six months ago during the legislature. Members of the legislature were threatened and browbeaten and about everything else to prevent the enactment of tax laws. Nor was all this undue influence exercised by any one interest. An effort is being made by John E. Fredrick, president of the state Chamber of Commerce, to get all the interests, such as manufacturers, hankers, farmers and merchants, to agree on some kind of tax legislation that may be presented to the next legislature. It is to be hoped that he will succeed. But the way to succeed is not to advocate a sales tax or some particular system that will shunt the bßtiten from one class to another.
