iHters, taxi cab drivers, bell hops and the two counties are “cleaning I np." The only requirements for a mar-! ! riage in Wellsburg call for being 21 years old and single. Citizens of ithe town have the process well orjganized. Two taxi cab drivers will ,' meet a couple at the train, see that a marriage license is procured, find a minister and take hus j i hand and wife back to the train! there for a flat rate of $11). Castors have shortened the marriage vows for "hurry-up” marriages and charge a flat fee of $5. “Extreme Cruelty” Here 30 days in Belmont county constitutes time for “residence” in order to obtain a divorce. "Extreme cruelty’’ is stretched to the extreme and three minutes in court with a SSO fee bring a divorce, provided, of course, that the case is uncontested. Then it may take a day or two. It is estimated that during the i past year the marriage caravan spent $40,000 to have wedding hells ring up the river, and SIOO,OOO to muffle them here. No Chickens on Mayflower An authority says: “It m.pears j that the only domestic live stock aboard the Mayflower was goats ! swine, poultry and dogs “

COOLIDGE MAY TOUR EUROPE IN NEAR FUTURE Trip Predicted by Friends On Eve of His 59th Birthday Washington, (U.P.) — The possibility that former United States President Calvin Coolidge will soon .ravel abroad was expressed by his intimate friends here upon the occasion of his 59th birthday, which will occur tommorrow. These friends recall that he is yet comparatively young; that he is retired with a moderate personal fortune, and that lie has never visited abroad except to touch briefly at Havana, Cuba, in 1928 to address Hie Sixth Pan-American Conference. Coolidge prides himself upon being an aveiage representative American titizen, a former secretary of his said here recently. He already has crossed ami recrossed the North American continent. What is more natural, it was suggested, than that he should tire of retirement and decide to see something of foreign countries. That is the usual I thing for retired citizens of the Unted States to do. Depression Blamed Friends here believe that he might have undertaken a world tour soon after leaving the presidency had it not been for political considerations. The advent of the depression soon after he retired brought Into prominence such international problems as war debts, tariffs and disarmament, on which he ltad positive views. To tour European countries and accept the hospitality of other governments so soon after leaving the White House might he embarrassing in one way
j or another. The change of an administration jor the passage of a year’s time would alter this. Precedent for world travel for reI tired United States presidents ex--1 ists in the trip of former president 1 Ulysses S. Grant, who retired early ■ in life. He made a world wide trip. Shorter Lives ; Despite much talk of Coolldge’s returning to public life, the history of former presidents would indicate littlo likelihood of such a development. A recent investigation of the

lives of ex-presidents by Dr. J. L. t Merrylees reveals that most of tliem , have lived privately in retirement. It also shows that their lives have been much shorter in the last half cent lAy than earyer in United States history. Os the presidents who served before 1853, the average life after retirement was 15:6 years, according , to Dr. Merrylees. But since 1853 the average life of ex-presidents lias een only eight years. Ohio’s Toy Town Escapes General Business Slump Bascom, O. - (U.R) — This town points with pride to the fact that as a village it has escaped the effects of the business depression. Boasting only one industry that supports its 500 inhabitants, the village looks to J.G.Naugh to see it through with no ill-effects. Naugh is owner of the combination wooden ware and toy plant that sustains the 150 workers and their families and in addition owns the village raii- —.——
road, purportedly the shortest rail branch in the world. It extends from the toy factory to a trunk line siding. When several of the village's carpenters died recently, factory girls were employed to aid in completion of a dance hall. —o ; Saint Gobain Seeks Oil Paris.—(U.R)—The Saint Gobain group of chemical, sugar and glass
