Spraying Fruit Trees ! To Kill Codling Moth

1 (By County Agent) < The variable weather conditions -! during the past two months have - J been responsible for prolonging codling moth emergence which , makes it more difficult to exactly time the first second-brood codling , moth spray, especially in northern j Indiana. At Bedford the first worms pupated June 17 and the first worms will |. likely enter fruit as early as July 5 or 6 although probably very few before July 7 or 8. According to the records of!; County Agent L,.- E. Archbold, es- | peclally. those furnished by Ur. Lathrop at Vincennes and Mr. Mar- i shall at Bedford, the first larvae of | the second brood will be hatching | and entering fruit on the following j dates and sprays should be on by ! i j these dates to get best results. ! i Evansville and vicinity, July 3-6.!, ! Mitchell, Bedford and Vincennes, i i July 5-9. , j 1 Bloomington, south, July 8-10. I, Noblesville, south, July 10-12. 7: Fort Wayne, south, July 12-14. |< Extreme north end of state, July i 114-16. j, j Owing to the fact that large! l numbers of worms went into win- j ter quarters last fall, the mild win- ■ ter and less activity of birds in de-; i stroying worms on the trunks of i trees, and the favorable conditions!’ this spring, the codling moth is it very abundant and thorough spray-j: ings is usually important. jj

quake, however, the steel will sway | and jangle against the pillar. The j recent earthquake in New Zealand was reported to. the Bellaire Daily j Deader seven hours before the tie | mors were recorded on the St. Regis college seismograph in Denver. Those who have investigated the “instrument" offer a possible solution in the situation of the Bickmeier home, which is on top of a hill and perhaps a rock that extends far into the ground. Any ear'll vibration might shako the rock, they said, and thus produce a vibration of the log pillar. The Hrst cover spray for the sec ond brood worms should contain not less titan IV6 pounds of arse nato of lead to 50 gallons, excepting for the earlier maturing varieties, when only one pound should be used. One to l'i pounds should j he used for the later cover sprays and from present indications thic j second brood cover sprays will be essential for good control, these to be applied at approximately two week intervals. Our experiments ft r the past 4 years with summer oil sprays have given control comparable with the Standard lead sprays. Fruit sprayed with 2% summer oil, except in rare instances, did not contain a residue above the tolerance at harvest, while almost invariably the standard lead plots did bear an access of residue. However, since in jury was noted last year( a very unfavorable year) we do not unreservedly let inmend the summer oils. If summer oils are used, care should be taken to avoid spraying on very hot days and also forceful spraying to the under surface of the leaves should be avoided so far as possible. A one per cent summer oil spray with nicotine sulphate at the rate of one pint to 100 gallons of spray material gives results comparable with the 2% oil. If oil sprays are used, sulphur sprays of all kinds should be avoided as the combination may result in injury.
