MC LARNIN ON WAY TO TITLE New York, May 28. *U.R; With Blllv Petrolle, "the Fargo Expies t," definitely sidetracked, Jimmy MeLamin today was well on the road toward the world’s welterweight championship. Jackie Thompson, negro titleholder, ’now remains as the sole barrier to the throne, and MeLarnin earned the right to attempt to clear this final obstacle when he scored a decisive 10-round victory over Petrolia at Madison Square Garden last night. McLarnin made an impressive showing in beating the ragged Petrolle, and the face that the bout attracted a crowd of 17.846 spectators who paid >82,377.38 to witness the show virtually assured him of being paired against Thompson in a title bout early next month. Petrolle, although eliminated from welterweight title consideration. was far from disgraced in his' test with McLarnin and his game stand may win him a lightweight championship bout against Tony t’anz: neri. The Fargo. N. I)., slugger made a game stand against a man who is rated as one of the' truly great ringmen of the day and I won many new admirers by his | courageous fight. The fight lacked the dramatic, quality of the previous Petrolle- I McLarnin encounter last November in which Petrolle gave McLarnin a sound lacing. McLarnin held the upper hand throughout, but he took no chances against Petroile’s deadly punching end abandoned his usual role of a sharp-shooting slugger to win on boxing skill. He gave a masterly 1 boxing exhibition. There were no knockouts, and, few of the thrilling slugging exchanges which featured the pre- j vious bout, but McLarnin punished ■ Petrolle severely and when the contest was over the game little Fargo; battler presented a sorry spectacle. He was so arm weary that it was an effort to raise his hands inl acknowledgement of the ovation he received for his courageous stand, and so leg weary that he staggered in returning to his corner. bleeding from the nose and mouth; and Ills face was badly swollen, i I with one eye almost shut. i. McLarnin, who weighed 142 i against Petroile’s 138, was unmark-1 ■ cd and fresh enough to’ celebrate, the unanimous decision of Referee Arthur Donovan and Judges Harold' ' Ihirnes and Joe Agnello by turning a series of handsprings in midring, j ’ For the first six rounds the 1 bout was a distinct disappointment to | those spectators who were hoping for a fight. It was a pretty boxing duel but neither fighter did any real damage and few hard punches were landed. > McLarnin started 13 open up in the seventh. He had slowed Pe-1 trolle down with halting left Jabs I and when it became apparent that j the midwesterner was growing weary, Mcl nrnin took away the ; play and set a fast pace He con-1 tinued to box cautiously but stood ' his ground occasionally and rocked Petrclle with stinging left hooks , and right counter punches to the ’ head. In the ninth Petrolle was too I weary to raise his hands in de-1 fen.se and McLarning drove him about the ring, rocking him with a two-fisted attack. Petrolle weath- ! ered out the round and came back : in the tenth to meet McLarnin in a toe to toe slugging exchange which made the session the best of ! the fight. GIANTS LEAD ' IN NAT RACE New York, May 28. -U.R) A hard and steady drive which yielded 18 victories in their last 23 games h is enabled the New York Giants to take* the National league leadership away from the. S'.. Louis Cardinals. Although they actually had led , the Cardinals in games won and Host, the Giants did not reach first I place until yesterday when they defeated Boston, 7 to 4 while Pitts- | burgh shut of St. Ixiuis, 4 to 0. j Previously the 1930 pennant win--1 tiers had held the edge by a few I percentage points. \ six-run lead garnered in the 'first four innings al'owed the 'Giants to coast to victory. Berly, I a rookie, held the Braves at bay ■until the eighth inning when be I was relieved by Heving. Heine Meine, star Pittsburgh | ■ right hander, allowed the Cardinals j | only eight hits in shutting them i out for the second time this year. ! The Pirates bunched their ten blows off Johnson and Lindsey for two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and another in the ninth.l Chicago advanced into third I .place by winning from Cincinnati,' 8 to 4. Bush went the distance for the Cubs, but was in constant trouble because of the 11 hits he allowed and tiie three errors turned in behind him. Brooklyn and Philadelphia in the] National league were not scheduled. The Washington Senators moved into second place in the American league, tour and one half games behind Philadelphia, by taking beth I ends of a double header from Bos- j ton, 11 to 3 and 4 to 3. The Senators collected 11 hits off three Red Sox hurlers in the opener and took advantage of four Boston errors to win the second. Philadelphia shoved New York down to third place, 6 to 5. After the Yankees had gone into the lea 1 in their half of the eighth inning, the Athletics came back to knock Sherid, who had relieved Pipgras. tout of the box to score the tying land winning runs. Mickey Cochrane contributed his heavy hitting and got a home run, double and. single in four trips to the plate. . Cleveland advanced to fourth i place by defeating St. Louis, 5 to I 4. while Detroit dropped a double' header to the Chicago \Vhite Sox. , 5 to 4 and 10 to 1. The defeat ■ dropped the Tigers to sixth place. | a half game behind Chicago. The Indians scored four runs in i the ninth inning to defeat the Browns while the White Sox stag- ■ ed a similar rally to win the opening game from Detroit. In the second contest, Pat Caraway allowed the Tigers but five hits. Yesterday's hero: Heine Meine, j Pittsburgh pitcher, who shut out | St. Louis the second time this season, 4 to 0. Meine allowed only eight scattered hits. He is the only hurler who has k6pt the Cardinals from scoring this year. o Like a Potato Love Is like a potato—lt’s got eyes, but It s blind. -Collier's Week
