bility upon their shoulders. Metro • GoldwynMayor have devised a very sens ible way out of this difficulty for Robert Montgomery. He will alternate his stellar roles with feature leads. The first of the latter parts will be in “Sea Eagles,”
the cost of which ought to gladden the hearts of film fans. Wallace Beery, Marjorie Rambeau and Clark Gable all are in the film. An arrangement similar to Montgomery’s will allow Beery and Marie Dressier to accept either featured or star roles in M-G-M pictures. It seems to me everybody concerned will benefit from the plan. The seats of the mighty are greased and sloping. A few bad starring pictures, and it’s the toboggan. HARSH JUDGMENT. Five production officials were lunching together in .a popular Hollywood rendezvous. A few tables away, a well-known scenarist eyed them dispiritedly. He ■ turned to his companion. “Not a hit in the carload,” he sighed. GOOD ADVICE. And then there’s the story of the supervisor who put his associates at ease in a story conference. “It’s going to be very informal," he said, “we’ll just think out loud.” Whereupon a cynical voice from the rear remarked: “Don’t be a ' sucker.” LATEST GOSSIP. It is costing Radio Pictures .plenty to keep Richard Dix. He is said to get $50,000 a picture plus I percentage. And after one more, I there’ll be a new deal all around. No doubt, Richard will boost his ante... Incidentally, Director Paul
Auto Concern Is Sued St. Louis, Mo., May 2%-(UP) — Two suits were on file in Federal j on t here today against the StudeImker motor company, seeking to ■ ! prevent them from using a free wheeling device and an accounting! of profits received from the inven-1 lion. The suits were filed by Charles I'''. ( Johnny Farrow limps around on • cane and is otherwise bunged up. His horse sat on him Saturday . Talk about address books. The casting director at M. G. M. knows ' i the phone numbers of 3.000 pretty girls... One of the larger studios i has found it advisable to lift its ban on smoking on the sound I stages.. The actors were too hard to find when it came time to shoot a scene... The role of a modern I Paris was braved this week by Clive Brook. He selected the prettiest girl from several photographs to go into the year-book of Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. FAST THINKING. Joe E. Brown is a great adlibber. His stage role as the-con-ceited baseball pitcher in “Elmer the Great” calls for him to eat ' large quantities of food. One night a large hunk of g ape-fruit slipped off his fork and slopped down his I vest. Instantly, Joe turned to another character. “Gee, Boss,” he exclaimed, “that's the first error I’ve made this season.” The line went so well that the incident has gone into the show. PLANS CHANGED. After all, Barbara Stanwyck will not star in “Safe in Hell” for | Warners. Studio officials have

decided to limit the picture to ; featured roles. No semi nine lead has been selected, but Richard B e n- | nett has been ' engaged for an important part. Roy Del Ruth is looking for the rest of his people. The story, as you may have heard, is by Huston Branch. It’s as daring as the law allows.
DID YOU KNOW That Irene Dunne’s father used to build Ohio River paddlewheel steamboats?
opened fire on them. Several bullets had punctured the mai hine, police said. Jackson was in a critical conditipn today with wounds in the head land abdomen. Bauer was reporlt'd recovering from shotgun wounds.
