[JAPAN’S JOBLESS HELPED BY KIN IN TIMES OF STRESS | Acceptance of I’’ a in i I y I Responsibility Prevents j Much Distress Uy .Mlles W. Vaughn I (United I’ress Stall Corresitonden’ ‘ Tijft.vu, —(UP)—(Japan's unenn I ployment situation is virtually staI tiouary and while there is no ind!I < ation of an eairly iniproveinemt |; there equally is no indication the I number of jobless will increase durI lug the summer, a government I spokesman told the United Press. I It should he. remembered, the I spokesman said, that the problem I of unemployment manifests itself I in Japan in away entirely different ] I f.om that of the United States and I Europe. Japan's social structure,: r built on the family system keeps 1 I the number of entirely unemploy-' l ed at a comparatively low figure j I and dees much to prevent suffering ; |i Families in this country are large' I and nearly every group at least] some members have jobs. These ] support their brothers or cousins | | who are out of work, or divided, their tasks with them. Home Industries In addition Japan has a great num I ber of home industries and these I provide at least partial employment for persors who may have lost the work they had in factories during the period of prosperity. The I home industries cover a great range I of activity and while workers may not be well paid they at least are able to make some sort of a living. The Japanese always have been adept at finding wort-tor all mem- , bers of the family and even when I , regularly employed many workers, I have had side jobs in addition, i I Thus a factory worker often tills a I small farm during his spare hours.] If the factory closes and he loses his job he merely devotes all his time to farming instead of merely ha part. Or he may aid his wife who likely has had some some independent occupation of her own. such as running a small shop or doing piece work in one of the hundreds of I home industries. Adaptability Shown Scores of cases of the adaptabi-1 lity of the Japanese in earning a livelihood may be observed in To-1 , >yo. A former municipal clerk who]] lost his job two years ago has act- , . ed as housekeeper and cook for his' I family while his wife earns enough 1 \Ue/p/ I YOUR MONEY WORRIT Home life is happier when worry is eliminated. Money will generally solve the problem. You can get any amount up to S3OO from us, and have twenty months to renay, if you need it. Square up all your debts now end then repay us ns you earp. Wake Up Your Liver Bile! —Without Calomel
i And You’ll Jump Out of Bed | i in the Morning Rarin’ to Go If you feel sour and sunk and the 1 world looks punk, don’t swallow a lot of salts, mineral water, oil, laxative candy or chewing gum and expect them to make you suddenly sweet and buoyant and full of sunshine. Fbr they can’t do it. They only more the bowels and a mere movement doesn’t get at the cause. The reason for your down-and-out feeling is your liver. It should pour out two • pounds of liquid bile into your bowels I daily.

to buy food and pay the rent. A'■ chauffeur who lost his job Is acting '■ pis assistant to his wife who runs 11 ;u small tobacco shop. The chant- I ; ieur had purchased the shop, which 11 l is little more than a "hole in the I i wall," when he was earning a comI putatively good salary during times ( ] of plenty. Now it earns a living for I ; him and his family. Always Economical i The Japanese, while never an I especially frugal people, always it .have been economical and are able] to make ends meet on very small' I incomes. Scores of cases are listed where a single worker is supporting an entire family, and doing so < heerfully and as a matter of course. The family system, of couse j is responsible for this. Japanese are I trained in family responsibility from birth and the Individual always is subordinate to the group. Accurate figures as to unemployment in the serac in which such statistics are understood by Occidentals obviously are impossible. The ■ last census listed only 3(M),000 of ' more than 40.000,000 workers in Japan proper as jobless. Unoffi-i 'rial sources placed the number at • 1,000.000. Labor unions, for example I I list any members as unemployed I I who can not find work at his regu-1 • lar occupation. Actually the worker ' 'may be employed 12 hours a day in i a garden patch or in some : home industry. o net the Habit—Trace at Home I BEDDING PLANTS of all kinds. If this bile is not flawing freely, your food doesn't digest. It just decays in the bowels. Gas bloats up your stomach. You have a thick, bad taste and your, breath is foul, skin . often breaks out in blemishes. Your head aches and you feel down and out. Your whole system is poisoned. It takes those good old CARTER’S LITTLE LIVER PILLS to get these two pounds of bile flowing freely and make you feel "up and up.’* They contain wonderful, harmless, gentle vegetable extracts, amazing when it comes to making the bile flow freely. But don’t aak for liver pills. Ask for Carter’s Little Liver Pills. Look for the name Carter’s Little Liver Pills on the red label. Reaent a substitute. J
