'COUNCIL PLANS REBUILDING OF POWER LINES (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE. streets and south to Adams street. This will be the principal power line, from which other lines will be fed. Plant Pays Cost The entire cost of the improvement will be paid for out of the. earnings of the electric light de-| partment cf the city plant. It is I .estimated that by the time the en- • | tire system is rebuilt bet ween $50,- ; iiOO and $60,000 will have been expended. * The cost of rebuilding tile first i unit is estimated at between $lO,- ' (too and $12,000. The electric light ' ' department has the cash reserve to 1 pay for the work as it carried out ' and according to present plans the 1 i rebuilding of the system will lie 1 [stretched out over a number of ' 1 years. 1
DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT TUESDAY, MAY 26. 1931.
Reasons For Improvement One of the principal reason for rebuilding the distribution system now is the condition of the lines: and poles on Second street. The poles and lines are more than 20 years old and many are rotten nt I the bottom. Engineers state that in tiie event of a heavy storm or sleet storm, that the poles might - break, causing great damage, and [ linteruption of service and probably' 'loss of life. Another reason for rebuilding the I lines is an economical one. Much| of the electric energy is lost, due' to poor insulation of the wires and i the fact that the lines have been 1 added to from time to lime, mak-| Ing it necessary to erect transform-! ers throughout the city. It was estimated that a saving of fjom $5.000 to $6,000 a year would be real- [ ized by the power plant after all' the lines were rebuilt and that the' rebuilding of the up-town circuit would result in the saving of much I money. To Remove Poles As the lines are rebuilt the poles and wires will be removed from the) streets and placed in the alleys' and cross-city lines will be fed from; the main circuits. There will not be any poles on Second street, it
