essential problem involved hi producing a 54,000 pound reflector for the telescope Ims been solved. Experimented With Smaller Ones In order to make this reflector two smaller quart* reflectors had to be manufactured so that Imperfections that might possibly occur in the finished work could bo' avoided. By studying the building up of the smaller ones, experts in charge of the construction of the 200-inch reflector said they expected to avoid imperfections in the larger one. The problems facing those manuI factoring the test mirrors were difficult. A twenty-two inch mirror was first attempted. Molecules of melted quartz were sprayed continuously on a disc inside a fiery furnace, where the heat was one-third as great as that of the sun. When the quartz coating was fiveeighths of an inch thick the cooling process was started. This had to be done slowly, a degree at a time. The annealing took two weeks. The experiment was declared :i success and provided quartz smelters with the knowledge necessary to attempt a reflector on an even larger scale. First Test The next test was in the manu-

This work called for a much larger furnace, a greater degree of heat and 225 times the .quantity of quartz. The advantage in using the quartz process is that the annealing is much quicker. A 2000-inch mirror made of glass would take nine years to cool, it was stated. In addition to this the pouring of glass and the final grinding and polishing would make the period of construction about 15 years. The quartz mirror for the Californit Institute of Technology is expected to be completed within two or three years when the observatory will be ready for its installation. BRITISH JAILED FOR THEIR DEBTS London, May P. — (U.R) —Nearly two and a half thousand people served terms of imprisonment for 1 I | debt in Brixton jail ( London, last year, despite the fact that imprisonment for debt was abolished, in principle, during the last century. The actual figures for last year , were 2,419, and are regarded here as startling, although Brixton jail i is, today, the only debtor’s prison i for London, and the total is a small decimal point of population percentage. In the early nineteenth century there were two famous debtors’ prisons, the Fleet and Marshalsea. Both have long since been demolished, the Fleet in 1846, and the Marshalsea with other debtors’ I prisons, a few years later when I the county court was established |as the poor man’s civil court of summary jurisdiction. From that day imprisonment 1 simply for debt ceased. The 2,419 sentenced last year were incarcer- | ated because, according to the judges, they could pay. In other words, they were imprisoned for I contempt of court. The period of imprisonment is strictly limited. Forty-two days is the utmost limit of imprisonment that a county court judge can im- ■ peso of a debtor who does not comply with the order for payment made on a judgment summons.

HAVANA PLANS PROGRAM FOR FIRE FIGHTERS International Chiefs To Meet There Oct. 13-16 In Convention Havana, May J’. —<U.R) Havana thase days is actively laying plans for handling one of the most con-1 centraled invasions of ‘‘visiting; firemen” in the ancient i history. Although one of the most popu-| lar stamping grounds in the world for ‘‘visiting (firemen,” as members J of the American colony refer to the many guests they are ( ailed. upon to entertain, Havana soon is to play host to Vona tide visiting firemen. These guests will be members of the’ International Fire Chiefs Association. They are expected to arrive here 2,000 strong and will take the town over October 13-16, inclusive, for their annual international convention. The firemen, incidentally, could hardly have chosen a more appropriate city for their meeting. Here there is but little chance that their hosts, the members of the Havana Fire Department, "will be interrupted by the call of duty. Fire Department figures for the fiscal year 1929-1930 show that there were 22 fires, and one false alarm. Property damage totalled less than $125,000. This unusual record largely is due to the fact that Cuban cities are built entirely of stone while Cuban homes use no curtains, rugs or other draperies. The fire chiefs will arrive in special trains to Key West, Florida, where they will board the new P.
