that is that April clearings showed a one per cent gain over the month previous, which is taken by many to mean that we have touched bot- 1 *• tom. ' "t. 111! 1 !!! 1 . ~ '■ The hoys are doing a lot of talk--1 Ing at the National Chamber of (■ Commerce meeting in Washington I* and it is to be hoped that out of all the discussions will come some 0 movement for the betterment of 0 conditions. The men are wise in [J business and manufacturing and if ' a they will devote sufficient time and [J effort to the problems, will be able 1 to solve unemployment and gen- < era! depression. 1 Senator Watson and Congress- ] I man Vestal have promised to do s all they can to have the contract- ‘ ors for the new federal building here, employ local men at standard ; wages but they will have to move ' fast or much of it will be out of the * way. Certainly that was the in- . I tent of the men in congress who 1 , appropriated the hundreds of mil- ■ lions of dollars to aid in the employment situation. x The republicans prefer not to 'discuss the tariff and the demoil crats would like to avoid the prohibition question and so it is suggested that they make a trade and leave both out of next years campaign. Well, what’s left to talk about? Os course there’s the depression but that doesn't need any talk. Its evident and the voters are plenty sore. The result will probably be a general broadcast of every thing as usual. ■ ■' I ' - The death of Charles M. McLean of Holland. Michigan, has caused sadness here. He is well remembered as the president of the Hol-land-St. Louis Sugar Company when they located a plant here twenty years ago and during the preliminaries and afterwards, he held many conferences in this city. He , was an honest and courteous gentle- . man and lived a fine Christian life, I (Jibing recognized in his home city i tor his activities in educational, church and business affairs. The recent legislature passed a bill which provides that all coal , purchased by cities, counties. , schools and other public units must come from Indiana mines and that , each must pay for same ten per . cent, over the general market price. That's a rather tough proposition and will of course be tested in court for this is certainly no time to pay out dale, which the extra ten per cent, amounts to. In the meani time however, effort to comply • with same will have to be made, . we presume. Its fine to use home . i products and this may stimulate . j that but in many instances Indiana ■ | coal is not suitable to the requires ments and there will be some hard- , ships resulting. 1 Was Worth Over SSOO, Says Hiner I “I wouldn't take five hundred t 1 dollars for the difference Sargon ! . has made in my health and vital _ ity," declared Ernest E.
