RADIO STATION AT NAUEN SHOWS GREAT GROWTH Germany’s I* ower fu 1 Broadcaster Tiny Plant ’ 25 Years Ago Nauen, May 2. — (U.Rc - Twentyfive years ago a sntal group of engineers and technicians opened the first German wireless station in the open country near here. The plant operated with eight kilowatts and was powered by a small steam engine. It had a range of about 3,500 kilometers, and could reach St. Petersburg, or Maderia. Today, Nauen can operate 20 high-powered radio beams for telephone conversations to as many points or. thb earth, including Sydney, Bangkok. Tokio, Mukden. Santiago Chile, Manila, Buenos Aires, Rio Janeiro, and North American stations. Telephoto service has been working with North America for some time. Picture service was opened with South America in June of last year. The telephone link with Siam was inaugurated last December. Siam Goes Wireless The installing of thg Siam station is an interesting sidelight <on the ■ development of radio telephony in I the Far East. The German Tele Ifunken Company handed over the I short-wave transmitter at Bangkok •in 1928 for public service to Europe, Java, and the Philippines. In I the first year it took over virtually I all the traffic formerly handled by I cables, and it soon became apparent that the station would have to Ibe enlarged. As soon as the radiotelephone service between Nauen and Buenos Aires had definitely proved the worth of this service, the Siamese government gave ord ' ers for re building and enlarging. 'the plant. The Siam connection was officially completed in December when Prince Purachatra spoke from his palace in Bangkok for an hour and a half to his son in Hamburg, sone 5,750 miles away. The conversaition was as clear as an intra-city ' call. The Bangkok transmitter is also used as a trial short-wave breadcasting station. A brief glance at the past eight years will show some of the expanjsion which the German stations at Nauen, and the receiving stations 'at Beelitz (phone and pictures) and ■Glewitz (code), have been making. Egyptian Radio Connections with Egypt were opened in 1923; telegrams also were routed along this link to Abyssinia, Erythrea, Italian Somaliland, Irak. trans-Jordania, Pales- ] tine, Syria and Lebanon and the Hedjaz. The Dutch East Indies connection with the Malabar station was com-.

CHAMPION National Change WEEK May 4 to 11 Chief Engineer Rohde Explains Benefits Resulting fiom Periodical Use of New Plugs in Car
< hampion National Change Week for 1931 is set for May 4 to 11. This is the week when motorists install new sets of spark plugs in their car motors to obtain the better performance which experience has taught them will result. Change Week was established seven years ago and thousands of experiments had proved certain after prolonged research facts about the life of spark plugs. One of the facts thus revealed was that wh e n spark plugs have been used in 10,000 miles of driving they have deteriorated to such an extent that new sets secure more power and speed, faster acce'eration and all around better performance and economy for another 10.000 miles. The reason is explained by O. C. Rohde, Champion’s Chief engineer and a recognized authority on ignition problems of internal combustion engines.

“The intense heat, the ravages of chemical reactions and the tremendous mechanical shocks to which spark plugs are exposed inevitably take their toll, no matter how well made the plugs may be”, says Mr. Rohde. ' “Electrodes share with insulators in the destructive effects of the demoralizing forces at work. In the modern spark plug electrodes are of special analysis, specially treated alloys. They last much longer than those in spark plugs of a few years ago, but there still remains an inferno of heat and chemical conditions in which they must function. “After 10,000 miles of service the results of this harsh treatment are readily observed in the electrodes of all spark plugs. “It is a proved fact that new spark plugs every 10,000 miles represent an actual economy in gas and oil alone. Furthermore, they restore in large measure new car power, speed and acceleration.
