April 2—(UP) —The resorqtion of wide op*n gambling in Nevada under sanction of u newly-elected law brings to the heart of the Nevadan a new promise, a new hope, of early prosperity and good times, Nevada was In Its greatest heyday when gambling flourished. High stakes and affluence have always been synonymous to natives. The entire history of Nevada is interwoven with games of chance in all its forms, faro, roulette, poker, klondike, and mining stock speculation —the greatest gamble of all in the hectic boom era. One of the largest personal fortunes in the state had its inception over the green felt of a poker table. Lured Adventures Gold, silver, hot liquor and gambling provided the lure that attracted the wanderer and adventurer to this territory in sufficient numbers to admit Nevada into the Union. They brought into exist-, ence such towns as Tonopah, Gold-

NAVY GUARDS EXPERIMENTS ■ WITH SECRECY Laboratory Divided Into Divisions Each On On Task Washington, April » —<U.R> —The fleet gathers for its annual man.covers; a naval conference ponders intricate questions on tonnage iln Lindon; squadrons of airplanes dive and zoom overhead in a demonstration; u President boards a battleship to visit neighboring I lands. Such ar» the times when the United States navy comes into the public’s eye. But beyond those superficial glimpses are scenes the public never sees, stories it seldom sees. The story the navy kpows lis one of unceasing training 1 and preparation, of constant vigilance throughout the world, of neverending efforts to aid the fighting forces with the resources of i science. Experimental Laboratory In Washington, for instance, the navy department maintains an experimental laboratory. There more than 200 trained scientists work in the utmost secrecy. Some of them i toil over test tubes, complicated ‘electrical apparatus, or other mate- ' rials remote from guns and’armorI plate. » The experimental work is organized into revisions: Radio, underwater sound, metallurgy, physical chemistry, heat and light, therodynamics. and a consulting division. The work of these units is so closely guarded that one division seldom knows the nature of i the experiments being carried out ‘ by another. Occasionally the navy announces its successful experiments. For 1 example the development of one of the marvels of this radio age—a broadcasting set compact enough to be carried in an airplane, jret so 1 powerful that its signals can be picked up over a range greater than that of the average land station. An Occasional Leak Once in a while, too, there is a “leak.’’ The navy recently was much annoyed by the publication of a picture of one of its pet I achievements, the submarine airplane. This plane, said to be
