ATLANTIC CITY, N. J.. March i 17. —With her famed dimples in' 'full blossom, in the fading Sum-! ■ rner of 1523, -winsome Charlotte i ■ Nash strode down Atlantic City's boardwalk. As "Miss St. Loftis” I she was one of the contestants in ! th;' beauty pageant, of that year at this famous seaside resort. She . won first prise in the boardwalk i parade and was fourth among the ■ international beauties, also a close I runner-up for the coveted title of; "Miss America.” Romance bloomed with Char-1 . lotte's dimples and awoke an au--1 swering chord in the heart of Fred IG. Nivon-Nludlinger, Philadelphia i millionaire theatrical magnate, I who was the guiding star of the I pageant of that year. He fell madly in " love wit It I Charlotte. Although married at 'tile time to Mrs. Isaura McKenna. I ;'■ ills second wife, this man of J wealth and influence openly i avowed that he would make tile ' beauty winner the most? attractive i woman in ail history. : With this thought i;t mind, he . I enrolled Charlotte in the fashion'able National Park Seminary al . ■ Forest Glen. Md. Iler tutors were i instructed to mold her into a “peri
feet lady” and Charlotte had a full life as a student. She was to ac- j quire perfect pose, deportment and correct accent, dancing, literature, w'sic. French history and liorseback riding. The visits of this Fairy Prince |*o lhe Cinderella girt found her i doing exceedingly well. Rut in a j short time, the fashionable school : wajs left behind as Charlotte and ! I Nixon-Nirdljnger eloped to Ha- : , gerstown, Md.. and later sailed on I I a Euroean honeymoon. They too up residence in Paris., and soon the small cloud which ap- , i peared on the horizon of romance i of the young beauty and 54-year-' old millionaire, grew in immeusity.' Eighteen .months after the lnirried trip to Hageratown. Charlotte and the theatrical magnate sepa- , rated. Thrice they were recon- ■' cited., only to eventually appear in I the Paris trilzmaJ, each seeking a ' j divorce. Each got a divorce iu ' ‘ 1925. ! ' This compound-divorce did not I lake, for two years later, Char- ' j lotto Nash and Nirdlinger again • i walked to the altar and for the second time were man and wife. ’' Today Charlotte Nixon-Nird- -: linger sobs her strength away in
the jail of the Third Arrondise- , ment at Nice, France, far away from the scene of her earlier triumphs. She has no fears tot herself. | Her only care is her two young children. Freddy, Junior, 3. not ye‘ aware of the tragedy that has deprived him of his father, and ;of tiny Charlotte, her 18-months-iold baby. | The 2fi-yoar-old widow tells in broken French how the revolver with which she fired the fatal shorn that killed her 54-year-old jealous husband, was her only protection against him when he threatened ' her in an alcohol-aggravated rage, j The tragedy lias east gloom over I'he usual gayety of the American •| Colony >’.n the French city, and the ■ ■ shadow of tlie prison closes on »hc i i girt whose famed dimples, showing . ; l>ove tile bright banner of “Miss ij St Louis” won the heart of the | millionaire. His Ixidy will be I brought hack to Philadelphia as • soon as the French authorities re i lease it. thus drawing the curtain ■ on another scene far different from the Boardwalk at Atlantic •: City in 1928, beauty para'dc 1. and thrilling music.
