CRANBERRIES i START DEBATE I — j Springfield, 111. • Mar . —(UP)- I : The merits of the cranberry as ’compared wit.i other berries have s»n*'ted a controversy between two Illionis newspaper columnists. i cuciiie L. Bowen, who conducts la column in a Springfield newspaper addition to bis position as superintendent of State Charitable institutions, has taken issue with V,. G. Sibley, columnist of the Chicago Journal of Commerce, on the latter’s ...aitme t tha; the iranber.y is the 'pariah of all berries.’’ "We have .teard of cranberry pie but hope never to be confronted i>y one,” said Sibley. i Bowen rose to the defense of the 'crandberry by associating it with 1 two periods in his life. "One period was when they used to prodme hives and the other was during the pie eating ear when the ( only free and easy democratic ch'op house in the town served a cranberry pie de luxe with th? top criss crossed like gingham cloth" he said. "This pie retailed over the counter at a nickel a cut which was a I thir < of a whole, or a dime for the whole pie. It behooved us to merge our nickels and buy wholesale. Thus a cranberry pie with two schooneis of milk, direct from the barn lot and out of the old tin can, that stoon in the ice box, made a meal tor at least two of us. "Those were good old days when the cranberries raised the hives and a dime raised a wind epie and milk tasted like somethin’. ” o INVESTIGATE STRANGE DEATH OF MRS.
