HIGHWAY MAPS i DISTRIBUTED ' (CONTINUED FROM PACK ONK) ; map is a revised color scheme ! making it much easier to follow' I both state roads and the major | I county toads when riding in a car. j | Surface types of both state and, county highways are indicated as I regards pavement. New mileage added to the state, system a few months ago, with additional mileage tentatively I agreed upon for inclusion at a later j date, are set out in dotted lines and |in colors. For the first time a state | road map carries a directory of ’ state parks, state institutions an 1 I places of historic accessibility, and ; in such a manner they are noted I easily. These places are indexed , and located further by margin il ■ reference, as also a marginal ref-
erence locates towns and cities.l •I This feature while of great con I < ' vcnience to state residents, is al- | | most invaluable to out-state visit-' j ors attracted to Indiana by good j | roads and recreational places and I, i who annually contribute l irge snmsjt [to the gasoline fax. chief con tri bn- h tor to the highway department's ! finances. While the face of the map con tinnes to show distances between, i towns by mileage reference, there i I also is a mileage chart on the ie- 1 jverse side. This table at a glanced I enables the reider to determine d ! the distance ' between towns far j 'apart without computation of ths: hog mileage enroute. ! Perhaps one of the most import- J
jant additional features is the large I scale maps cn the reverse side p showing in detail how state roads l’ route through twenty-three and industrial districts. :marked as state routes are in bold., I lines, but all principal busim •&S ] (streets of each city are shown as j la convenience to automotive trav- , >elers. , Ij , These individual scale maps,, i further show suburban towns ad- , jjaeent to the major cities, and by ! ( use of circles, each circle indicat- ( ling one mile, makes computation of I, i distances within towns of easy de- 1 termination. Each circle bears the ■ number of the .mile it represents.!* For instance, the distance from ' Monument Circle, Indianapolis, to i Fort Benjamin Harrison, at aL I glance is shown to be 9 miles. , 1 ; Calculations on the individual II scale maps are in air line measure- •, ment.
The congesled Calumet district containing an unusually large number of cities and towns, is grouped' in one large scale map and gives] information on streets and state road routes through Hammond, I Gary, Whiting.
