NATIONAL WILL USE NEW BALL — New York. Jan. 4. (U.R)’ Thos» I National leagu baseball fans who I love nothing so much as the sight! inf a spindly-legged athlete break-i , ing up a game by "hunting" a home run over the fence or into the bleachets may he a trifl- disap- I pointed in the 1931 s ason. For < the new ball adopted by the league i owners is calculated to take the 1 home run out of the hands of s everybody, including the batboy, i and restore it to legitimate slug-' g rs. < That is. the new ball with its I .heavier, looser cover iill will re-1 i spond to a good, • old-fashioned | i smack on the nose but will not j 1 heap ever the Centerfield fence t when caress d by anyon wearing 1 IflanYie’e and spiked shoes. In addition to the heavier, less i resilient cover, the new ball will r have the raised stitches of years 1 ago. which will give th- pitchers ‘ more to grip when uncorking their; t deliveries to the batter. In recent! years the ball manufacturers have spent a great deal of their time d - vising ways and m ans of reducing the stitches to a minimum. The result of their labors was a ball that offered a pitcher just about as much to grip as does a well-oiled door knob. In addition to adopting the new | ball the own rs approved the 1931. playing seas m, calling for the open : ing game cn April 15 and th? closing one on Sept. 27. The latter date, by the way, is the earliest in ' 22 years. —o
