screen, Warner Brothers have appointed Ivan S i tn p s on, veteran stage di- *. coach tae J’vd-'ig people whom Rufus Maire expects to discover on scoutin g tour, through schools and amateur dramatic societies.
Mr. Simpson Ayers is a person of more importance than you may imagine. He has . been with George Arliss fbr many years, acting as stage director and as a performer of character roles. He also is credited with some of the, fine touches that have gone into Arliss’ pictures. The arrangement that Warners plan is quite paternalistic. While the new players will be used for extra work, they also will receive free instruction in stagecraft and will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their ability in a series of one-act plays to be given every other Friday night on a studio stage. These performances will be a family affair, with all studio employes invited to come and bring their families. Another duty of the apprentice actors will be to aid the Scenario Department when a snag is struck in a scr.pL They wili be given the dialogue to read, so that the lines can be tr.ed out and all modifications made before the actual cast is put to work. W amers is only one of several 1 studios interested in seeking new j material. Fox scouts have been working quietly for many months. A LARGE ASSIGNMENT. Paul Whitman is in town and someone remarked upon the fact to Lew Cody. “Is that so?” said Lew. “It’s funny he hasn't called me. He must have come incognito.” TACuES TURNED. At the premiere of “Outward Bound. a publicity man pulled a neat coup on Archie Mayo Holly-‘ wood practical jokester. Just before Archie arrived at tn»» theatre the microphone had been cut off. Not knowing this, ■ he was persuaded to stand before j tne disc and make quite a speech. 11 As he turned away, the pub-1 . Itcity man thrust his face in front; i Elkhart Couple Confess Today Elkhart. Evelyn Brent’s contract with Columbia has just been officially dissolved. Her husband, Harry Edwards, made a trip to New York to confer with Harry Cohen on the matter. Evelyn made one picture at Columbia. She had two more to go . . . Lewis Ayres and Lola Lane continue to concentrate on each other . . .
