LANDSLIDES STILL FEARED I Danger of More Slides Is Acute At Lyons, France Today Lyons, France, Nov. 14,—(U.R)— | Danger from further landslides remained acute today ami constantly threatened volunteers who dug Inio the piles of earth and debris imprisoning victims of yesterday's three avalanches. The rescue operations were so precarious that only seven bodies had been recovered today, although i.fficial announcements placed the known dead ai 40 and unofficial estimates were that the toll might reach 70 or 80. Most i f tlie bodies recovered were those of women. One threeweeks old baby died in a hospital after being taken from the ruins. Failing walls harassed the rescurs today. The nearby hospital Des Chateaux was crumbling, and was evacuated, as were all other buildings in tlie vicinity. A dramatic aspect to the situation was given by the theory, expressed by city engineer Chaluni'au. that the disaster was caused by tlie flooding of old underground galleries dating from the time of the Romans. After seven hours of tunnelling, one nun, Sister Blandine, was rescued. She said other nuns were missing. Two other victims were heard groaning near where she was rescued, but could not be reached. The prizes for which they compete include 1200 offered by agricultural papers and SI,OOO known as the Department of Agriculture prize. A nuge level field of corn, standing straight and with, exceptionally long rows, yielding between 40 and 6o bushels to the acre, is tlie contest "arena.” Tills Is divided into longitudinal sections down which the contestants race, picking ears from two rows of corn at a time and tossing them into wagons drawn ahead of them. At the end of the field they turn back taking the next two rows. All picking stops at tlie end of one hour end 20 minutes. The the mun whose wagon contains the largest number of bushels of corn, whose rows have been picked cleanest and whos picked ears are fresh from husks is declared winner. Present Record The present record was established in 1925, when Elmer Williams of Illinois picked 35.8 bushels. That was when the national corn crop was about 3,000,000,000 j bushels. This year, with a minimum crop, which reduced the num-1 her of ears and their size per acre,! tlie results are expected to be less.
