I i —• — t The next legislature will redistrict the state congressionally, this i being necessary because Indiana ; will hereafter have but eleven con- t grtssmen instead of thirteen. The [; faet that the lower house will be ( democratic and the upper house republican should make it necessary tc be some where near fair. I — ~ — < Senator Watson says the Tues- t . day election was not a personal < repudiation of the president “but I < merely the reflex action that has c followed sweeping republican vic- < forks in presidential elections the t past decade.’’ Now that we under- ; stand the cause, whats the next > ntoye ? , — Senator Fess, of Ohio, probably , knows there was an election. In , charge of the national republican ( committee he will be charged with , not doing all that he could to pre- , vent the recent ballot avalanche , which lost him his own state and , about every thing else that wasn't I, nailed down. The election in the eighth dis-1 It let was entirely too close fori, comfort for either side and prob-!, ably means a recount. If the dis-1, ference is less than a dozen votes, I it could be easily changed in any , precinct and it is likely that neither!, side will feel just satisfied unless the vote is carefully counted over. The vote given Dore B. Erwin in Tuesday's election was to some extent at least a vote of vindication for whicn he and his friends ftel . very proud and happy. Defeated i six years ago he came back with a whirl that proved the high esteem in which he is held. He is a lawyer I of ability, with years of experience back of him and will make an excellent record on the bench. The election over, we might turn “ to real things that will relieve presconditions. Each individual and each community can do that and with success. It takes a little extra effort, harder work than in

normal times, but it is not impossible by any manner of means. You know that often times you surprise yourself when you really try to do <l thing by aueceediug beyond your hopes, if we buckle in there are ! no problems that cannot be solved. The election of the state ticket in Indiana will mean a lot of changes in the state house. The j secretary of state alone has some 1,500 appointments to make, the I auditor has about half that num- ! her and all down the line the list is large, but don't worry, there will [be plenty of applicants for every job and one of the toughest ones for the officers-elect will be to select efficient assistants who will aid them in making a record for themselves and their political party. The weakness of Congressman Vestal surprised the leaders of the democratic party as much as it did those of his own. in Madison county where he resides he was badly defeated. He lost heavily in | I, Adams and Wells, broke even in ' Jay and made a poor showing in comparison with former years in I the strongholds of Randolph and Delaware. He has served for four-1 teen years and as whip of the house was considered one of the stalwarts. His primary race last spring divided his cousitueney to | some extent but largely the vote [ was one of protest against what he and the administration had failed to do. His opponent, Claude Ball, an attorney of ability, demonstrated that he is highly regarded. Indiana voted in rather an em-I phatic manner against the propos- j ed constitutional convention, the total bi ing better than three to I one it was indicated. Adams county showed a decided trend in ' opposition, opinion here being has- ■ ed upon the fact that this was no time to spend that much money and because it is believed that I such corrections as are really needed can be made in a special elec- I tion and without the danger of getting a dangerous constitution tiiat would require years of litigation. We believe good judgment i was used but we also believe that the next legislature should give sane and serious thought to how the tax laws can be altered so as I to relieve some of the situations i which now exist. — There were many interesting : election returns that brought pleas- ■ ure here but none more genuinely I enjoyed than that which told of the success of oui fellow towns Iman, Herman L. Conter. To win uti office in Lake county is always something for the democrats. In faet so far as we have been able to ascertain, it has never occurred. Mr. Conter and his associates won decisively Tuesday. Herman being chosen to the very responsible position if county treasurer. Those who know him and his ability are I predicting that his record will be one of such efficiency as to be pointed to as a model as was his record as assistant secretary of state. Congratulations, Herman,] eld boy, every one here, regardless of politics, sends you best wishes. * TWENTY YEARS ~ AGO TODAY | I From the Daily Democrat File I ♦ • November 6, 1919 was Sunday. r> ———, NOTICE—I will be out of the city until Tuesday, November 11. A tablet called Rexall Ord- • erlies has been discovered. This ■ tablet, attracts water from the sys- . tern into the lazy', dry, evacuating bowel called the colon. The water ' looeens the dry food waste and causes a gentle, thorough, natural movement without forming a habit or ever increasing the dose.
