TWO NEW AIR LINES TO BOOST FLYING MILES Greatest Development Since Private Concerns Entered Field Chicago, Oct. 21.—(U.R>—Within the next 30 days air mail nnd passenger planes operating within the United States will be flying more than 115,000 miles every 24 hours, according to Wisor Williams, manager of the American Air Transport Association. Under the present schedule, the aggregate mileage now is 108.&48 miles daily. The opening of two new transcontinental routes —one from Atlanta to Los Angeles and the other from New York to Loh Angeles—will raise it to 115,000 miles. Foreign air mail and passenger planes, which travel into Canada, Mexico, South America and into the Caribbean, account for an additional daily mileage of 17,254. This makes a combined daily total of 126,202 miles o'er an aerial net-

work or 55,532 miles. Os this network, 31,562 miles nre within the territorial limits of the United States. Practically all of this flying has originated aince Sept, 1, 1927. when the post office department turned over the last of the government operated routes to private contractors. When th» two new air lines are put into operation, more than a score of new cities will have ntr ■ervlte. Many more will be able to avail themselves of it by means of synchronization of train schedule with off-line mail stations and the establishment of feeder systems. Since the beginning of air mail service by private contractors the miles of lighted airways, permitting the flying of cargoes at night, have increased from a few experimental routes ’in the middle west to 14.500 mile , wh'le 608 airports and landing fields equipped with; beacons ami flood lights, help provide for the night service. International commerce is rapidly coming to the realization of the value of the foreign air mail service, according to Williams. A letter may be sent to Santiago, Chile, 7,000 miles away, and an answer received within two weeks The combined rail and steamship time to the same point is four weeks.
