WOOD CARAVEL OF LOUIS XIV IS ORDERED DUILT Normandy Shipbuilder (Jets Contract From Rich Argentine By John White United Pres* Staff Corresponden - Honfleur, Normandie, Sept: 19(UP) This little Norman seafaring village is prouder than it haI been for 100 years, and an Argentine, Dr Carlos Noel, is responsible. Dr. Noel has commissioned Jean Prentout, shipbuilder extraordin ary. to fashion him a wooden caravel in the image of those which flew the French flag in the glorious reign of Louis XIV. Already the stout oaken hull ot the caravel, which is to he called Izarra, the Basque world for star, has been laid in the business like yards of M. Prentout, and soon the giant figures of bow and stern, a mermaid and a Napoleonic swan will be carved out of the rough oak
by another Argentine, a wood carver hired for the express purpose by Dr. Noel. The Izarra will have a displacement of two hundred tons. Il will be 110 feet long with a 26-foot beam. The bridge will measure #8 feet The draught will be seven feet four inches und the lieighth above the water line at th* stern will be only 18 feet. ■ The caravel will be rigged with the usual square sails but It will not lepend on these for propulsion, a.i the llzarra will be equipped with a single 120 horse power Diesel motor capable of driving it across the ocean should the occasion demand. The boat deck will include a large saloon and office forward and officer's quarters In the stern, while 1 "A" deck will contain the owner’s ■ quarters, three guest rooms, three oath*, galley, engine room and crew 1 quarters. Whe>e Dr. Noel will take his ’ 2,000.000 franc craft when she is 1 completed next spring is a jfecret 1 from the builder himself. “1 premine she w ill deploy in coastal waters and in the Mediteranean" M 1 Preiftout said, dading proudly, "but • she is certainly capable of crossin': ' the Atlantic. If her owner should ' ever care to show her to his coitn--1 try men." I o Get the Habit—Trade at Home.
