MANIAC KILLS GIRL AFTER HE ATTACKS HER . ‘ (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE, was found by Mrs. Richard Bus--1 chatz. whose home is next to the • vacant lot. Marberine's blue dress 1 with a white collar was badly torn, indicating she had struggled ' against her attacker. Investigators believed the pretty, ’ brown-haired child was killed to ’ stifle her screams. The man might have struck her on the head with an automobile wrench and then bound her throat with the wire to ’ stop her cries, they said. Her death may have been unin-’ ’ tended, they said, but was caused , when the wire was drawn too [ tightly. The blow on her head J opened a deep wound. ! Scores of citizens joined every member- of the police department in the search today. Authorities believed he was a native of South Bend and every owner of an automobile of the model driven by the ' kidnaper was to be questioned. Although only one man was seen in the kidnaping car, it was believed a companion joined him in the attack and murder. Detectives hoped first to find the kidnaper and learn from him the identity of the second man. Mrs. Mary Mitcaret, a neighbor of tlie Busehatz family, said she sew two men running down the alley about an hour before the body was found. Marberine's brother. Otis, 12, also said he saw a man

near the vacant lot about that time. Jack Stamcer, 32, was questioned today after Mrs. Appel told police he acted strangely when he called at her home last night. After ask- ' ing if they had any word of the missing child, Mrs. Appel quoted him as saying: "Well, don't worry, you’ll find her tomorrow.” Marberine had spent most of her days alone while her mother was at work. The mother W'orked in a factory and did not see her daughter during the day. On Wednesday, she was gone until 6 p. m. • The man who kidnaped Marberine had driven about the neighborhood Wednesday afternoon for hours, other children said. Marberine and two other girls | were walking along a street near the Appel home when she was last seen. An automobile drew up to the curb, a man leaned out and called: "Jump in my car and I'll give you some more candy.”. The child got in the motor car, the door was 'slammed and the machine sped , down the street. The other two girls were unable to . supply a description of the driver. Mrs. Helen Hope, a neighbor was the only adtilt witness of the incident. She thought the driver probably was a friend of the Appel family and paid no partlcu--1 lar attention. When Mrs. Appel arrived home from work she called the families iof her daughter's playmates, with whom Marberine often stayed until dark. Unable to find her child, the frantic mother finally notified police. Mmberine's parents were divorced five years ago. The father, James Appel, lives in Chattanooga, Tenn., but she has not seen him tor three years. Mrs. Appel said. The murdered child was ot’ fair complexion with brown hair and gray eyes. She was about three feet five inches tall and weighed about 60 pounds. Marberine was a third grade pupil at Franklin public school. Authorities throughout Indiana and Illinois were notified and every sheriff in the two states was given a description of the kidnaper’s
automobile. It was believed he t might have escaped to Chicago.
